Julia Heavner, PsyD, sees individuals and couples for therapy. She considers cultural and individual identity factors as she works to establish a collaborative therapeutic environment in which each client feel safe, empowered, and heard. Her special areas of interest include identity development, romantic relationship concerns, religious issues, and ADHD/executive functioning challenges. She utilizes the Gottman Method (Level 2 Trained) and elements from EFT in her work with couples. When seeing individuals, she draws from training in psychodynamic theory, DBT, and relational approaches. Julia completed her doctoral work at Loyola University of Maryland and her internship at University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s Counseling Center. Previously, she worked at the counseling centers at Notre Dame University of Maryland and the United States Naval Academy, a community mental health center, and a private practice.
My goal is to understand what has caused you suffering and to support you in feeling better. One way that I think about what "feeling better" means is to help you literally become better at feeling – better at discerning, accepting, and directing your own feelings. This self understanding can be life changing in facing the human task of surviving everything from everyday to extreme struggles. Shame is commonly the biggest barrier to finding support to resolve our problems. Seeking resolution all alone can feel defeating and leave people feeling lost, stuck, and disconnected. Trying alone to think through difficulties over and over without a sounding board can lead to distorted mental knots. In therapy, you can let all that uncertainty out in a safe space. Without judgement or bias I will join you in sorting through and untangling the different threads at play to find clarity, relief, and new found self-understanding and strength. Sometimes picking these threads apart can feel like coming undone, and I will be there to support you through it with the full attentiveness and care you deserve. Through this process we can connect and form a deeper shared understanding of the select threads that emerge as most important to you and follow them towards your personal growth and success.
My name is David Akva and I'm a licensed psychotherapist. I provide therapy to adults and adolescents in Baltimore, MD. I specialize in treating PTSD, anxiety, and depression and also have experience working with issues pertaining to men’s health and Jewish identity. I am passionate about working with individuals struggling with their spirituality and relationships, including difficulty relating to existence, family, friends, partners, etc. My therapeutic approach stems from somatic psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Among other interventions, I primarily use mindfulness-based body-centered interventions to assist my clients in recognizing the connection between their bodies and the trauma they’ve endured. I assist them through identifying the life events that trigger their symptoms, and together establish safe coping strategies. I offer my services to individuals, families, and couples and have utilized my approach in many areas of mental health.
When clients first come to see me, many mention previous negative experiences with psychotherapy. Complaints often are about therapists being “unresponsive,” “too clinical,” or even “silent.” People come looking for a connection—a relationship in which they can feel safe to be vulnerable, to speak difficult truth, to reveal pain, and to find possibilities. I believe that this solid connection between therapist and client is a prerequisite for significant healing and growth in any therapy process. My professional commitments include: ongoing development of my clinical skills and competence; openness to regular feedback from clients about what they need and how they experience me so that we can maintain a strong therapeutic alliance; efforts to examine myself honestly and to address my own healing so that my needs will not interfere with my clients’ best interest; respect for all individuals and refusal to discriminate based on race, ethnicity, gender, spiritual/religious affiliation, or sexual orientation. I live in Towson, Maryland with my two daughters and Golden Doodle pup, Chase. Chase joins me at work and loves to lie on or near clients’ feet. My approach to therapy often focuses on what gets in the way of (1) maintaining authentic social relationships and (2) managing complex feelings. Many people seem to struggle with being fully known by others, which often starts with more fully knowing yourself. I use a socioculturally and emotionally attuned frame to help people gain insight into how their past has impacted their current struggles. Specifically, I specialize in the treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma/PTSD, OCD, relationship concerns, grief/loss, family of origin/attachment issues, life transitions, and cultural identity development. I use a treatment approach that integrates psychodynamic, metacognitive/ACT, interpersonal process, and existential therapies using a multicultural lens. I also have advanced training in group psychotherapy, ERP and I-CBT for OCD, DBT for crisis stabilization, and narrative reprocessing therapy for trauma. I provide in-person therapy in Baltimore, MD and virtual therapy in MD and in 43+ PSYPACT states, including D.C. I invite you to contact me to see if we would be a good fit and wish you well.
Welcome. Whether you want to improve your relationships or experience relief from depression, anxiety, or stress, our expert therapists can guide you towards personal growth. We offer individual, group, and couples therapy.
My areas of strength are relationship building and my compassion and warmth when working with college students, adolescents and adults. I am able to build a sense of resilience and hope with clients that I work with in treatment. I have a realistic and reasonable approach in meeting the individual needs of clients. I believe that each person requires personalized treatment and needs to be supported throughout the therapy process. I have worked with the adolescent population within the school setting as a special educator and school counselor. My experience helped me develop superior relationship building and empathy. I continue in my practice to work with the college student and adult populations dealing with anxiety and depression, life transitions, stress management, relationship issues, social skills, self-harming behavior, and trauma. I use an integrated approach to therapy with the main focus being Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I feel that being able to identify automatic thoughts, rationalizing and restructuring distorted thinking, is essential in bringing about positive mood changes. I am dedicated to providing ongoing support throughout the therapy process.
Spill the tea! It can be difficult to discuss what is truly going on in your head. It may seem like you’ve tried everything, but nothing seems to work, at least not for very long. It can be scary to reach out to a counselor because you are not sure that you can find someone that you can really connect with and help you make changes in your life. My focus is on teens, emerging adults, and adults, who struggle with anxiety, depression, interpersonal issues, and difficult life transitions. I am intensively trained in DBT and use an eclectic approach. Together, we’ll create a customized plan to get you back on track.
Hi, I’m Rebecca! I work with adolescents and adults to help navigate anxiety, depression, stress, and body image/ eating disorders. Often people will come to me because they’re feeling overwhelmed. Maybe there are perfectionistic patterns that keep getting in the way or a feeling like their brain won’t shut off from overthinking. Perhaps food has become a way to cope when feeling low, leading to cycles of guilt or restriction. They’re often looking for ways to feel better, and I’m happy to offer guidance and help. I use a mix of evidence-based practices and have a warm, strength-based approach. Therapy looks different for everyone, but often it involves gently exploring how your patterns formed, how they’re showing up today, and what it might take to shift them in a way that feels sustainable. Searching for a therapist can feel overwhelming, and taking this first step is a big deal. I’m really glad you’re here! If you’re looking for things to feel a bit lighter or more manageable, reach out and let's connect.
No one wants to feel alone in their struggles—and yet, being human with our tricky brains, that’s often exactly how we feel. My role is to help you recognize that your feelings make sense, and that you don’t have to carry them by yourself. We’ll work together to find ways to ease your pain and build lasting resilience. Using evidence-based practices, I’ll help you slow down, notice what’s really going on beneath the surface, and learn how to communicate your needs with clarity. Together, we’ll build the skills you need to trust yourself, strengthen your relationships, and show up as your authentic self.
