Therapists for college students near Ann Arbor, MI
When life goes differently than anticipated you may be left grieving, feeling disconnected from life, or from yourself. You deserve to have a compassionate space to process and honor your experiences. Together, we'll explore the narratives woven through your life, understanding how past experiences continue to shape your present reality. We will reconnect you to your power, build resiliency, and learn to use your voice to live your life more authentically. With a relationship built with trust and compassion, you're invited to explore your deepest truths, express your fears, and bravely write a new story for your life. Therapy is a collaborative journey, and your voice, experiences, and perspective are central to our work together. Depending on your needs, we'll examine how family, gender, culture, and social expectations have influenced your sense of self, relationships, and aspirations. I draw from a variety of frameworks including Feminist, Narrative, and Family Systems. Reaching out is hard. If it scares you, you're not alone. You may try considering if your fear is saying "now's not the right time" or if its something more akin to "what will this change in my life". Curiosity, excitement, & the adrenaline of taking "the next step" can feel scary. Whatever you decide, trust you're right on time in your own journey.
Do you find it challenging to relax and enjoy the present moment, especially in difficult times filled with fear and uncertainty? Are you struggling to quiet your inner critic? Do you have a hard time sitting with intense emotions, naming them, and expressing them to others? I work with female and queer clients who want to feel more grounded, present, and empowered in their lives. Things such as trauma, substance use, anxiety, and depression can impact our ability to connect with our bodies, feel our feelings, and experience safety in the present moment. In addition to talk therapy, I offer somatic therapy: Brainspotting (which is similar to EMDR) and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. Somatic therapy uses a bottom-up approach of feeling vs. thinking. The body contains so much intuitive wisdom, and being able to sit with challenging sensations – in a safe and controlled way – can lead to better emotion regulation. Therapy can be challenging, so I strive to provide a light-hearted, non-judgmental space where humor and laughter become a part of the process. If I could be a good fit for you, email me to schedule a free consultation, or to schedule an initial session.

My name is Carolyn Roath. I am a Biblically informed Christian therapist, Master of Clinical Social Work, and owner of my own private telehealth practice. I hold a master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Michigan State University. My heart for those grieving relational loss and trauma has led me to this work. As a follower of Christ, I seek to create a safe and nurturing environment where the client knows they are free from judgment. It is paramount for me that I hold the vulnerable, tender, and painful parts of my client’s being with dignity and respect. Being trusted by a client is an honor I take very seriously. In my work I strive to empower my clients to be self-led, while gently guiding them with questions to prompt self-reflection. I resonate strongly with attachment theory, Internal Family Systems, and Interpersonal Neurobiology utilizing a strength-based approach. I perceive my role as continually validating clients while helping them process, synthesize, and analyze information through active listening.
Dr. Galvin and her colleagues bring a wealth of experience to bear for all age groups—children, teens, and adults. Our practice is founded in a growth mindset, that one’s talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good guidance, and persistence. With a variety of backgrounds and skill sets, our team of psychologists, social workers, and speech pathologists can provide support for a number of mental health concerns for children, teens, and adults.
I work with teens and adults who feel anxious, emotionally exhausted, discouraged, or worn down by chronic pain. Together, we pursue healing that honors both your mental health and your faith. My approach is grounded in clinical psychology, with the option to thoughtfully integrate Christian spirituality and/or address religious trauma in a way that is respectful, collaborative, and aligned with your values. As therapy progresses, you’ll begin to notice meaningful shifts. Life, work, and relationships will feel lighter and steadier. Moments of genuine joy will return. When difficult thoughts or emotions arise, they won’t pull you under. Instead of spiraling into overthinking or self-criticism, you’ll respond with clarity, wisdom, and self-compassion. The harsh inner voice softens, replaced by one that is kinder and more truthful. The world may still feel uncertain at times, but it will no longer feel hopeless. If you’re wondering whether we might be a good fit, I invite you to learn more about my story and approach.
Life can be challenging at times. Sometimes the guidance of a professional can provide you the clarity needed to help you move forward. I work with individuals seeking treatment for depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, substance use, codependency and life transitions as well as with families wanting to improve their relationship with one another. I have 25 years of experience working with families, specifically those dealing with estrangement, substance use and mood disorders. My theoretical framework is grounded in structural and internal family systems, lifespan development and attachment theory; interventions I use are framed within the context of feminist and gender theory. As your therapist I will strive to provide a supportive, accepting and collaborative space that helps you achieve lasting change and resilience. One of the things I love most about being a therapist is getting to witness people grow into the fullest, most authentic version of themselves. It’s incredibly meaningful to walk alongside someone as they work through challenges, uncover new insights, and build a life that feels more manageable, intentional, and aligned with who they really are. Watching that progress unfold — from the first session to the breakthroughs along the way — is a privilege I never take for granted. In our sessions, you can expect a space that’s centered around you. I always begin by inviting you to share whatever’s been on your mind lately. I find that when we don’t start there, the thoughts or worries closest to the surface can sometimes get in the way of our deeper work. But if you’re not sure what to talk about or nothing specific is coming up that day, that’s totally okay — I’ll guide us back to the goals you’ve set for therapy or revisit what we’ve been working on. My approach is person-centered, which means you get to lead the way and I’ll meet you there with support and structure. When I describe therapy to people in everyday language, I often say it has two layers. The first is what I call the band-aid approach — where I help you build tools and coping strategies that provide immediate relief. Whether you’re managing anxiety, navigating a conflict, or simply feeling overwhelmed, we’ll work on practical ways to feel better right now. From there, we’ll gently dig deeper into the “why” and the “how” — exploring what’s really going on beneath the surface so we can create long-term change. It’s about building a system in your life that helps you respond more effectively to challenges, emotions, or patterns of behavior. I deeply believe that each person’s story is shaped by their unique life experiences, cultural background, family dynamics, relationships, and more. These influences often play a big role in how we view the world and how we respond to stress or conflict. In therapy, I’ll help you make sense of those influences while also working through whatever issues are most present in your life right now. Healing happens when you’re ready for it — not when someone else tells you it’s time.
