Therapists for college students near Santa Fe College
One of the greatest joys I have in life is the privilege of walking beside clients on their journey to healing and wellness. I work hard to provide clients with a safe and comfortable space where they can address the issues of importance to them. I view myself as a fellow traveler whose role it is to collaboratively create a map to get clients where they desire to go. No two clients are the same, and no two maps are the same. Each experience with clients is new and deserves a fresh approach which is based on your needs, not mine. I work hard to get to know you, your story, your goals, your strengths, and your growing edges. I hope each and every client leaves the session feeling heard, valued, and respected. As a Marriage and Family Therapist I work with individuals, couples, and families from a systemic point of view. I work with clients to figure out where the various puzzle pieces fit inside their lives and relationships. I have earned a Masters and PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy, and along the way have taken extra training in a variety of areas. I am a sex therapist, a clinical sexologist, a certified sex addiction therapist, a certified partner trauma therapist, and a Gottman Level 3 trained therapist. I invest in the best training in order to provide you with the best tools. Clients come to me to work on issues of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, anger management concerns, recovering from sexual assault/sexual abuse, and for exploring issues of sexual identity or sexuality issues. I am comfortable working with individuals, couples, and entire families — and I am comfortable working with adolescents and adults. I am in-network with several insurance panels. In working with couples, I primarily utilize the Gottman Method Couples Therapy. This approach to therapy is one of the most well researched and effective approaches to helping couples resolve issues, increase connection, improve communication, and gain a better understanding of how relationships work. When I am not in the office, you can usually find me hanging out at home, tending the garden, collecting eggs from the chickens, caring for our goats, harassing our dogs and cats, or harassing my very patient wife and very tolerant adult children. I sometimes get to play golf (and sadly lose A LOT of balls). And I enjoy working with various local groups such as the Human Rights Coalition of Alachua County, the Human Rights Council, the PRIDE Center, and working to help make our community a safe place for all people. Licensed in or able to provide telehealth services in the following states: Delaware, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah, Virginia

As a licensed psychologist, I have over 20 years of experience counseling undergraduate, graduate students and adults. Generally, the clients who come to see me are overwhelmed, depressed or anxious. Almost without exception, my clients get better. Please see https://maryjofernandez.clientsecure.me for more information. Advanced training in multiple areas, is what I have to offer. My psychologist licenses include Florida and Massachusetts. My education, training and experience includes working with diverse cultures, races, sexualities and traditional/non-traditional religions. Short term treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy, is usually recommended. There are other options, including psychodynamic therapy (long term). There is a RTS stop in front of the office. My practice is located near Ward's supermarket and behind Chipotle on 13th St/Rt 441. I am a provider for some Massachusetts private insurances. If you have an insurance that I do not accept, then there are alternatives, for example a sliding scale option. On a more personal side, I am open minded with a sense of humor and a predisposition towards quality care. My clients tend to share motivation, determination and they work collaboratively.

Being human is hard. There are many emotions that come from simply existing. It can feel overwhelming to embark on the search and discovery of one’s most authentic self all while navigating the world around you. To learn what works & what you’d like to change. To find the language to communicate who you are to yourself & others. It can help to have someone accompany you as you learn & remember who you are or want to become. I can provide a space for all that you carry to be witnessed, validated, & explored. I’d love to join you in your journey towards embracing both the beautiful & painful complexities of being human. I know what it feels like to sit on the other side of the room. I am no stranger to therapy & I value giving you a sense of autonomy. I collaborate with you & operate from a place of relationship- which I believe can be the most healing tool. I hope to be a witness to your emotions & stories, to remind you that you do not have to journey through this alone. I specialize in grief, anxiety, religious trauma, life transitions, boundary work, & in working with the LGBTQIA+ community. I have worked in a variety of settings & have been so honored to journey with a multitude of clients towards their healing & authentic selves. If any of this resonates with you, reach out for a free consultation. I'm here for you!
I've been working with college students for over 25 years, using an approach that combines self-understanding ("how did I get this way?") with practical, specific methods to change behaviors and attitudes (" how can I make my day better tomorrow?") Whether the problem area is depression, anxiety, academics or a complicated relationship, talking it over with a professional -- and looking at all the details together -- can definitely lead anyone to a more satisfying and comfortable existence. I'm happy to file insurance for you, and will work with you to make counseling affordable. Reach me by phone at: 352-378-5278
We each come to this moment with our own story. Maybe you’re coming up against circumstances that, for the first time, feel beyond what you can handle, or maybe you’ve been grappling with your struggles for your entire life, so familiar with your internal battles that they seem inevitable. Maybe life has thrown one too many boulders your way and you feel yourself collapsing under the weight, or maybe you’ve managed to build the life that you thought you wanted but now wonder why joy, contentment, or meaning seem so elusive. Regardless of your story or your experience with counseling – from new clients to seasoned members of the helping professions – you are welcome here. I don’t believe in a single “right way” or “best theory”, because what you need will likely be different than someone else, and even different from what you may need a month or a year from now. It may be that what you find yourself needing is simply a space, held with compassion and non-judgment, to rest and sort through yourself. Others may need structure, skills, and strategies, or someone to help guide them through past traumas. Whatever your history, your own goals and needs will be at the forefront of our work. Within that work, I will draw from a range of different techniques, approaches, and theories to best support you, and make full use of the collaborative process to adjust and fine-tune as we progress.
I believe everyone has a story that stitches them together to make them who they become. The journey to complete wholeness of that story sometimes requires assistance, and I believe that’s where I come in. Whatever your presenting issues are, I desire to walk with you on your journey to wholeness.
Are you feeling stuck, burned out, unmotivated, exhausted or worse? That’s not life. You were meant to feel alive! By closely examining your thoughts, behaviors, and, most importantly, your emotions, you will discover what beliefs and habits keep you locked in negative, self-defeating patterns, and how to free yourself for good. Regardless of what happens – or happened – to you, you can learn to live a life filled with passion and purpose. I take a personalized, integrative and collaborative approach to psychotherapy, utilizing a wide array of techniques from depth psychology and individual psychology, to narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and others. I also believe in the power of expressive arts therapy and often incorporate music and poetry. My goal is to create a caring and supportive space for you to feel. To feel safe, and seen, and heard. Fertile ground to fully be and become the awesome person that you are. Let's get to work.
Young adulthood can be a time of tremendous excitement, joy, and opportunity. It can also be stressful and scary! I love working with people in this time of life as you navigate becoming yourself. I offer a welcoming and affirming space where you can explore the big and small questions you're facing about your identities, your relationships, and your future. If you're bringing a history of trauma or family conflict with you to college, I can help as you sort through it at your own pace and decide what you are ready to leave behind and what is important for you to carry forward. Feeling anxious or depressed? Therapy can be a safe place to learn and practice new skills to help you improve your mood and self-acceptance. The success of counseling often comes down to fit with your counselor—do you feel heard and seen, understood, and accepted and supported? This can be hard to judge through a profile. I offer a free 30 minute phone or zoom call to help us get a better sense of each other before you schedule an appoinment. I look forward to hearing from you!

I focus on working with clients to recognize your inherent worthiness at work and within relationships, build trust in your inner wisdom, and integrate mindfulness and spirituality into your daily life. Whether you are coming out of a painful breakup, redefining your career path, navigating how to ask for what you need in partnership, or creating a kinder relationship with yourself, our work together can help you build self-confidence, self-awareness, and stress management techniques. My ideal client is someone who wants to embody their creative side, is curious about spirituality, and longs to step into their greatness. I specialize in mindfulness as a tool to build a more loving relationship with yourself. I bring an integrated head (concrete exercises you can practice between sessions) and heart (deeper understanding of self and how to relate differently with your thoughts and feelings) approach. If you’ve been thinking, “I want to trust myself. I want to trust my intuition/inner knowing. I want to love myself wholeheartedly - on the days I feel powerful and the days I feel small. I want to embody the badass human I was born to be.”- This work is for you.
