Are you feeling overwhelmed with college life? Do you find yourself struggling with big emotions and low self-esteem? Being a college student today is already really, really tough! College students today need to keep up with school, friends, and the constant pressure of social media. It's no wonder they are feeling more anxious and depressed than ever before (the rates keep rising!). It's enough to make anyone feel like skipping school to hide out and binge on the latest Netflix obsession instead of facing the day-to-day challenges. As responsible adults, we know that ignoring the overwhelm is not going to make the problems disappear. Therapy can help! My clients often leave treatment feeling better about themselves, their ability to handle future stress, and experience healthier connections with others. Are you feeling overwhelmed by college life, struggling with anxiety, depression, social anxiety, or caught in cycles of overthinking? You're not alone—and you don’t have to go through it alone. I’m Dr. Paul Hoffman, a clinical psychologist with over 19 years of experience supporting college students through their most challenging moments. For the past two decades, I worked at Yale Mental Health and Counseling, including five years as its Director, helping thousands of students manage anxiety, depression, OCD, and the intense transition to college life. Whether you're adjusting to a new environment, facing academic pressure, navigating relationships, or coping with the stress of high expectations, I provide a warm, collaborative space to explore what’s going on—and tools to help you move forward. My approach is grounded in psychodynamic approaches and integrates evidence-based therapies like CBT and exposure-based techniques, but always tailored to who you are as a person. You’re at a pivotal time in life, full of potential—and also pressure. Therapy can be a place to breathe, reflect, and learn how to handle what’s hard with more confidence and clarity. Let’s work together to help you feel more grounded, more in control, and more yourself.

Shoreline Wellness Center places a focus on talk therapy (psychotherapy) to help patients better manage the stress they encounter in their daily life. Working with a therapist has many benefits, such as coping with feelings, facing and solving problems, or changing behavioral patterns that are leading to some of your symptoms. In therapy, we don’t just talk about problems. The main goal is to develop a reasonable and doable solution. Sometimes you may have “homework” to complete for your therapist. This may include something like tracking your moods throughout the day, journaling about your thoughts, going out of your way to be social, or joining in activities that caused you to feel anxious in the past. Your therapist may even suggest for you to try to look at things differently or to learn new skills to use in your everyday life. Therapy focuses on current and past thoughts, feelings, and issues. Both are important, as they may very well be connected in some way. Discussing your challenges and having an open dialogue is the key to finding the solution to help your present and prepare for your future.

Whether mental distress manifests as substance abuse, anxiety, depression, relationship issues of life event stressors, understanding the nature of our mind and how to master it rather than letting our mind master us is of singular importance. Learning to cultivate a Witness Consciousness which can observe the patterns cycling through your body mind continuum is the first step. Once one is aware of some core beliefs or behaviors that may not serve us, the next steps are change through CBT, breathwork, dialoging with wounded inner childlike parts which may have been repressed and consciously choosing to act differently vs. react in the same dysfunctional yet comfortable ways. This takes an ongoing commitment to oneself and one's growth throughout life but is a better answer than playing victim and blaming others or circumstances.

I am a passionate, engaging, clinically-driven psychotherapist who helps clients identify and change "Stories" that do not serve them. My background includes diverse clinical experience serving adults and adolescents across mental health and substance abuse diagnoses, biological sex, race, culture, gender identity, and gender expression. I use an authentic, relational-driven approach to facilitate exploration, growth, and change. We tell ourselves stories about our mental health, our ability to handle stress, our capacity to create and sustain healthy relationships, our self-worth, and more. Such stories have been shaped by experiences, biology, and events. Some stories are affirming, others distressing. Some stories that once helped us now hurt us. Some stories are simply untrue. I join with my clients in identifying personal stories that need to be changed and in helping them learn and implement strategies to do so. Whether or not we work together, I hope you find what you are seeking, and wish you peace.
