I believe in the profound gift that quality mental health care can confer and that reaching out for support is a form of personal empowerment and an indication of strength and hope. All individuals have the capacity to effect positive change in their lives; sometimes we just need someone to support us in identifying and understanding the thought processes and behaviors that may contribute to challenges and difficulties in our lives. I help my clients find joy and meaning by leveraging their personal gifts and wisdom in order to achieve their short and long-term life goals. Together we work to understand and gain insight into past conflicts and traumatic experiences and apply those insights towards resolving behaviors that may be interfering with present life and interpersonal relationships. I may also recommend the incorporation of practical behavior modification modalities, when appropriate, to accelerate short term progress. I provide counseling specializing in the treatment of eating disorders, anxiety and depressive disorders, life transitions such as adjustment to college, and have extensive experience working with individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community. My clinical approach is integrative as I draw from multiple therapeutic modalities in order to create an individualized and effective treatment plan for each of my clients. I have expertise and training in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Eye Movement Desensitization Processing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Eating Disorder Recovery. I also believe that mindfulness can have powerful application across all modalities. I consider it an honor and a privilege to be invited into the lives of my clients and to travel their journey with them through healing, positive change and self-empowerment. I would be honored to support you in overcoming your challenges, finding joy and actualizing and attaining your life dreams and goals.
Congratulations on the brave decision to seek therapeutic guidance, a true testament to your dedication towards nurturing your mental health. Have you recently experienced a change in your relationship, school, work, or family? Do you struggle with depression or anxiety? Whether you are experiencing upsetting symptoms, or just know that you want to make some positive changes in your life, psychotherapy may help. I believe that therapy is most effective when it is focused on helping you best understand yourself including your past, your current struggles, and your hopes for your future. Connecting with the right therapist can play a significant role in successful healing. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, relationship and social problems, self-esteem concerns, adjustment issues, and impacts of ADHD/executive functioning. In addition to being a licensed psychologist in New Jersey, I have also obtained the Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT #10591) with the over 30 PsyPact States (psypact.site-ym.com). If you reside in one of the approved PsyPact states, I am licensed to conduct telehealth in your state.
I have over 20 years of experience working with adolescents, adults and couples on a variety of issues, like anxiety, self-regulation, depression, addictive behavior and relationship conflicts. Using insight and effective learning strategies, I help people trapped in unproductive and unsuccessful behaviors to improve their health and enhance their relationships and work lives. I use research-based motivational techniques to help people prepare to make change and to maintain these changes in their lives. I incorporate mindfulness and other behavioral strategies to manage stress and anxiety. I am in-network with Princeton University Student Health Plan, and all subscribers will be charged a $10 copay for all sessions.
I am an experienced psychotherapist with an office in downtown Princeton. I have helped many undergraduate and graduate students navigate the stress of academic life. I have clinical expertise in managing depression, anxiety, relationships and PTSD related to sexual trauma. I am psychodynamically oriented which means looking at both the past and present to find solutions that promote growth and improved daily life. I have helped many international students and first generation students. I offer a caring perspective and welcome your inquiries.
I am a clinical psychologist and provide evidence-based treatment for problems including anxiety (and related disorders, such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and trichotillomania), depression and many other conditions, such as trauma and grief, substance abuse, adjustment difficulties or problems in interpersonal relationships. While I work with adults of all ages, I specialize in working with young adults (ages 18-28) and have worked in several college counseling centers, including Princeton University, where I completed my post-doctoral residency. Taking a holistic approach, I make sure that we focus not only on the symptoms but on your overall wellbeing. I create a safe and warm environment, where we work as a team to help you live a meaningful life. I offer a complimentary 15 minute phone consultation to help answer any questions that you may have prior to start of treatment.
I believe most clients want to enjoy a life which includes meaning, balance, and solid relationships including with themselves. Self-understanding and self-compassion contribute to self-empowerment and a stable sense of well-being whether alone or with others. Feeling that your therapist "gets you" and likes you can make it safe to explore one's inner world and reflect on thoughts, emotions, default patterns and potential new behaviors. I draw on many approaches in counseling and trauma recovery, including a gentle connection with parts of the self which may have become shrill, avoidant, critical, rigid, perfectionistic or self-indulgent or otherwise self-protective due to past experiences, or perhaps genetic transmission. When the "worries" of parts are appreciated and the underlying traumas addressed, new energy, resilience and options become available. I find that sharing information about the brain offers reassurance and a sense of "no wonder". I also find that present-moment awareness of the body in counseling often brings surprising clarity, fresh metaphors, and therapeutic momentum. I am an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and while I pray for clients and pray with the occasional client who requests this, my job is to support each person or couple on their unique path. Evangelism of any kind is never appropriate. My own struggles have deepened my compassion and wisdom but I do not let my experiences create "assumptions" in my work. As appropriate, I introduce strategies and practices for self-management, give homework, and help people stay accountable to their own longings, best intentions, creativity and passion, being curious with them about "action blocks". I work with lots of couples at all stages of relationships. I model curiosity and empathy for the emotions and needs which are not being seen, expressed or responded to-- the hurts, fears, and disappointments embedded in off-putting and protective behaviors. I help partners be safely vulnerable so they connect more deeply, treat each other better, and enjoy each other more.
You may be the first to go to college in your family or one of many but either way it can feel like an uphill battle balancing pressures from family plus the additional pressures you put on yourself either consciously or subconsciously . I specialize in working with the South Asian population especially bridging the cultural gap between 1st generation Americans and their immigrant parents who may have a different set of values or a different way of communicating. I practice from an anti-racist/ anti-oppressive lens integrating the mind, body, and spirit (when applicable) connection. I work with adolescents, young adults and couples from AAPI/BIPOC/ immigrant communities and focus on trauma and the ways it shows up, including anxiety, low self-esteem, and interpersonal challenges. I’m passionate about working with intergenerational trauma amongst South Asians. Grateful to be here and connect with you all! I’m out of network. If you have out of network benefits my full fee would be due at the time of service and I would provide you with documentation to submit to your insurance for partial reimbursement of services.
Wendy Perello, LCSW, has a specialized focus on helping individuals navigate through life transitions, trauma, career-focused stress, and self-esteem challenges. For nearly 20 years, I have worked with adolescents and young adults who have anxiety, mood disorders, gender identity issues, family conflicts and trauma from many different backgrounds. There is no single case that is identical to another, and everyone has their own unique story. I want to hear your story so that I may join your journey to heal. My main approaches are CBT, Family Systems Theory, EMDR, and somatic approaches. I also incorporate Eastern philosophy and focus on the mind-body connection to assist clients in understanding their challenges and rediscovering their authentic selves. As a person who came to the United States as a teen, I personally understand the pressure to succeed, the challenges to navigate the US college system, and the loneliness that limited resources and guidance that first generation college students go through. I have also advocated for people of color and the LGTBQ+ population in an effort to improve equality and deal with human rights issues many years. I strive to provide a safe environment for all of my clients without judgment. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Some of the scariest moments in life are when we feel as though we are losing or have lost control, and I hope to assist you in getting through the chaos. By providing a safe, non-judgmental, and encouraging environment, my goal is to support you in creating a life in alignment with your values and who you would like to be. As a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in NJ and a National Certified Counselor (NCC), with a master’s degree in counseling from Caldwell University from 2017, as well as experience with CBT, REBT, and ACT techniques, I am confident in my ability to walk with you through the process self-discovery. I hope to hear from you soon; in the meantime, I will be crafting, reading, spending time with family, friends, my partner, and my cat!
