How many times have you heard, “These are the best years of your life”? And who says this? [Hint: adults who went to college many years ago.] But if you ask a college student, there’s a good chance they will talk more about anxiety or depression than enjoying the best years of their life. According to the American College Health Association’s 2018 study, 63 percent of college students said they had “felt overwhelming anxiety” and more than 41 percent said they had felt so depressed that it was “difficult to function” in the past year. You might need help if you are experiencing intense sadness, hopelessness, irritability or frustration, loss of interest or pleasure in things, compromised sleep (too little or too much), lack of energy, changes in appetite, anxiety, feelings of worthlessness, trouble concentrating or making decisions, suicidal ideation or attempts, or unexplained physical problems. I will listen carefully and we will collaborate to work out a plan that meets your needs.

Are there aspects of your life that you are unhappy with? Are you feeling anxious, struggling to follow your dreams or having difficulties in your relationships with your partner, children, friends or colleagues? Are you dealing with chronic pain? If so, therapy can be helpful to you! Therapy is a space to discuss your struggles with a neutral person who is not a part of your family or your friend. In therapy, we will work together to understand your struggles. We will focus on building new skills to help you navigate difficult emotions or situations. We will also explore how past issues may be impacting you in the present.

Hello, I’m Alison. I help young adults who are overwhelmed, hopeless or anxious feel more in control and able to manage life's stressors and challenges. Some of the issues young adults have come to see me for include: relationship concerns, feelings of being overwhelmed, struggling to adapt to college or missing home, body image issues, life transitions, questions about gender/sexuality, and personal and family trauma. Trauma can include many things, such as relationship abuse, childhood abuse, illness, death, discrimination, and adoption issues. Using talk and somatic (body-oriented) therapy, as well as the expressive arts, I help clients connect to themselves and access resources to help them feel more at peace and in control of their lives. You will find me to be authentic, caring, and a dedicated support on your journey to healing. I bring compassion, mindfulness, and creativity to my work and consider it an honor to work with my clients. As a lifelong traveler who has lived in many places, I enjoy and value working with people from all walks of life. I look forward to meeting you.

At DBT Maryland, we specialize in providing comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which is essentially a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that incorporates validation and mindfulness. We focus on helping people learn to better manage their emotions and to create the life they want to live. DBT is an evidence based treatment that is effective at helping people decrease suicide attempts, deliberate self-harm, inpatient days, suicidal ideation, impulsivity, anger, and global mental health problems. You will work with your therapist to identify specific goals you have, including decreasing problem behaviors you want to change (such as self-harm, suicide attempts, missing class, arguments with friends, procrastination, or any other behavior that you feel is getting in the way of your goals). You will learn skills to improve your ability to tolerate distress, interact more effectively with others, be more present in the moment, experience fewer long lasting periods of negative emotions, increase positive emotions, and live the life you want to live.
