Hi! I'm Susan, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist trained as a medical and psychiatric social worker. I've built my career around the connection between physical and mental health, and I often work with people facing more than one challenge at once. Trauma, grief and loss, and significant anxiety are some of the areas I help clients with most. I'm an educator as much as a therapist. I want you to understand the why and how of what you're going through, along with the choices you have for working through it. I love helping people uncover the layers of their history and make changes so they can enjoy the present more. After all these years, my clients are still my biggest inspiration. Their courage and willingness to open up to change is what makes this work so rewarding. As your therapist, I promise to listen, be honest, and tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear. Therapy can feel scary, but think of me as a bright light in your darkest places. One of my favorite sayings sums it up: "Life is not measured by the breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away." Those "aha" moments are what therapy is all about. Change is inevitable, so why not learn to manage it well? One's life is far more important than a car, and a lot more complex, so let's learn to drive yours better. I look forward to meeting you! Susan Patterson, LCSW

Stressful life events and trauma can lead to disconnection from one’s self and others. This disconnection can manifest as anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Through therapy, you can heal and build a more connected and fulfilling life. As a Clinical Psychologist with 18 years psychotherapy experience, I work with individuals and couples integrating cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, and existential approaches to therapy. Therapy might involve coping skills, emotional awareness, mind-body connection, learning new ways of thinking and interacting to improve quality of life and relationships, and finding meaning. My areas of clinical focus include life transitions, anxiety, grief, interpersonal relationships, trauma, PTSD, C-PTSD, and sexuality. Integrative in nature, I draw from cognitive behavior therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, existential, interpersonal and mindfulness modalities. I provide individual therapy for college students and previously worked at a college counseling center. I work with individuals around a variety of topics, which include body image, eating disorders, grief and loss, identity exploration and development, athletic performance, sex and sexuality, chronic pain, anxiety, depression and trauma. I am both a talk therapist and art therapist, so students have the option when working with me to incorporate art making if they'd like too (but there's no pressure). I also was a collegiate athlete myself and tend to work well with student athletes. Please reach out if you feel like we could be a good fit- I'd be happy to help!

As a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) and Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), I specialize in providing highly tailored therapeutic support and executive functioning coaching exclusively to college students at Indiana University and around the country. I understand that guiding a young adult through the collegiate transition from afar can be incredibly stressful for families. My practice is deliberately structured to help students build resilience, while providing out-of-town parents with comprehensive advisory support and absolute peace of mind. Whether your student is navigating anxiety, depression, substance use, or a deficit in motivation and executive functioning, my goal is to deliver proactive, highly structured intervention. Through our bespoke consulting packages, we ensure students thrive both academically and personally, without falling through the cracks of large university systems. Specialized Therapeutic & Executive Function Support I provide focused, high-touch support tailored to the unique academic and personal demands of the college years, including: Executive Functioning & Motivation: Installing robust weekly schedules, study rules, and workflows to combat paralysis and build self-driven habits. Targeted Mental Health Care: Private therapeutic support for college-specific challenges, including anxiety, depression, and substance use. Academic Monitoring: Ongoing oversight, accountability check-ins, and early-warning risk detection to catch issues before they escalate into academic crises. Parent Advisory & Coaching: Direct guidance on establishing healthy boundaries, utilizing our Parent Oversight Framework, and navigating complex family dynamics. Why Families Choose Our Practice Bespoke Support Tiers: From targeted Individual Counseling, theSemester Launch setups or my 12-month Semester Concierge engagements, we provide the exact level of intervention your family requires. Executive-Level Advisory: We act as a "family office" for your students well-being, providing parents with regular status briefs and clear guidance on what to monitor versus what to ignore. Proactive Risk Containment: We do not wait for a crisis. We install systems, monitor academic progress, and coordinate a proactive strategy to ensure consistency and long-term independence. Recognized Authority: As the author of The Insiders Guide to Parenting and The Insider's Guide to College, and host of The Better Semester podcast, my frameworks are grounded in nearly 25 years of specialized clinical experience. Background & Expertise With a Master's degree in Community Counseling and extensive clinical training, I have dedicated my career to collegiate mental health. My approach combines evidence-based therapeutic practices with strategic, high-level advisory. Do you have insomnia or struggle with nightmares? Want to improve your mood, reduce worry/anxious thoughts, change unwanted behaviors, or better manage a tough relationship? My niche is working with clients seeking medium to short-term (1 year or less), goal-oriented counseling. Studies show many people benefit from this more focused approach. Sometimes even a handful of sessions can get you moving in a better direction! I'll help you identify realistic, concrete steps to make the changes you want to see in your life & together we'll create a plan to work toward your goals. (Note: this is not a good fit for every person/problem.) I'm a Psychologist with 22 years of experience & work with adults age 18+. I use evidence-based treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and integrate aspects of ACT & Mindfulness if appropriate for your needs. I'm also trained in CBT for Insomnia & CBT-Nightmares, both of which are shown to have positive benefits on other mental health symptoms. It can be hard to start counseling, especially if this is your first time or you found counseling un-helpful in the past. Good for you for taking this first step toward feeling better! Let's schedule a 15 minute phone conversation to find out what you're looking to accomplish through counseling & if we might be a good fit. Please note: I do not provide assessments/testing, and I do not write letters/complete forms for Emotional Support Animals, probation, court/legal situations, disabilities, ADHD, learning disorders, etc..

If you’re someone who lies awake at night replaying your entire day—going over conversations, decisions, and moments that felt harder than they “should” have—this might be for you. Many people who reach out to me say some version of, “I’ve always felt a little different. I can get things done, but it takes so much out of me. I overthink everything, I second-guess myself constantly, and I feel overwhelmed by seemingly small things” You might lose hours to indecision, get stuck in spirals of overthinking, or feel paralyzed. Often there’s a layer of self-criticism running underneath it all—wondering why it feels so much harder for you. You may relate to a lifetime of trying to keep up, mask, or push through. What once worked doesn’t anymore. Now it can look like burnout, emotional overwhelm, difficulty regulating your energy, or feeling like your nervous system is always “on.” On the outside, you may look high-functioning, capable, and like you’re managing well—but inside you’re worn out. Therapy isn’t about something being wrong. It’s about understanding how your mind works and finding support that actually fits. We can slow things down, make sense of what’s been overwhelming, and build more ease. I also offer nature-based therapy to help calm your nervous system and create space to think more clearly.
