Therapists for college students near 10003
College is constantly marketed as "the best years of your life," but honestly? Most days it just feels like a high-pressure cycle of performing, over-thinking, and trying to keep your head above water. Maybe you’ve done everything "right"—you’re passing the classes, you’ve got the internship, and your LinkedIn looks great—but on the inside, you’re dealing with major anxiety, burnout, or just a heavy sense of “is this it?” It’s exhausting to feel like you’re just going through the motions while everyone else seems to have their life together. I’m not here to lecture you or give you a "to-do" list. I provide a real, non-judgmental space where you can finally just breathe and be yourself. Using a mix of IFS and Narrative therapy, we’ll look at the patterns holding you back and help you figure out who you actually want to be—not who your parents, your professors, or your peers expect you to be. You deserve to feel grounded and at peace, even when the future feels like one big question mark. Let’s work together so you can stop just getting by and start leading your own life.
I have been in practice for over 30 years. My practice specializes in anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia, phobias, and "life issues." I see college students dealing with stress and anxiety relating to college, career decisions, relationship issues. Also see people who are struggling with bereavement, adoption issues. I work with people of different ages/stages: Young adults, mid-life and senior citizens. When dealing with life issues and anxiety I use Cognitive/Behavioral therapy techniques as well as psychodynamic techniques. When dealing with phobias, I believe in helping patients learn techniques to help relieve some of their anxiety symptoms and then working on their thoughts/cognitions which effect how they talk to themselves. My philosophy is : Life is to be enjoyed, not endured. Isn't it time you started enjoying yours.
My philosophy in working with others is to work within a respectful and collaborative relationship, with a here-and-now orientation, that acknowledges your strengths and competencies. My belief is that you know yourself better than anyone and it is you who determines your therapy goals. I recognize that change is a process and occurs on a continuum or in stages. Where you are on this continuum will help guide our work supporting a very individualized treatment experience. I approach therapy with a sense of shared expertise - client and therapist each co-creating successful experience and outcome. In other words - you are not alone! I work within an integrated model of care which is strongly influenced and rooted in Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT), positive psychology, harm reduction, mindfulness meditation, self-compassion and acceptance-based approaches all of which are now considered mainstream approaches to psychotherapy. I am also greatly influenced by the evidence-based teachings of Lifestyle Medicine as they impact emotional well-being. I specialize in the treatment of relationship issues including infidelity; depression, anxiety and its spectrum disorders; grief and loss issues, including pet loss; lifestyle and its impact on health and wellness (nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep and social support), sexuality concerns (including but not limited to those impacting individuals who identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual, gay dads and coming out issues), as well as men dealing with compulsive sexual behavior, erectile dysfunction (ED), Internet pornography; and those living with chronic illness, HIV/AIDS related concerns, alcohol and substance use.
Current openings for college students and grad students in person or virtually! I have 25 years of experience, and 11 of them have been working specifically with college students in local college counseling centers. So, I know just how to help you with what you're dealing with. Areas of specialty include mood or relationship issues, college transitions, young women's issues, and identity development focusing on the whole person. I also have extensive experience serving the LGBTQ community (and those who are questioning if they are), both individually and as couples. I take an affirming approach to all kinds of concerns such as coming out, relationships, spirituality, and finding community. I also offer specialized services for transgender and gender expansive people, including transition support (with specialized training through WPATH). My hours are flexible to fit your schedule, and I offer a sliding fee scale and take any out-of-network benefits for insurance (many college students, especially those from out of the area have out of network insurance benefits. Ask me if you would like help navigating insurance). Please contact me at my practice, The Rainbow Couch, via email, phone, or through my website, to find out more information or to schedule an appointment. I look forward to hearing from you!

Young adulthood is a time of transitions, growth and self discovery. While many new challenges can be exciting, this time of exploration can also become overwhelming. There can be a lot of “shoulds”, comparisons and uncertainty. My office is a safe space to process through all of these thoughts and feelings without feeling judged or criticized. Together we work to figure out a path to help you build the necessary skills and insights to launch into the adult life you are seeking. I love working with young adults and college students to help them embrace this season of their life. As a Registered Yoga Teacher I value the connection between the mind and body and what stress does to our overall well being. With that being said- if yoga/meditation/mindfulness is not your thing it does not need to be involved in your treatment. I always work to creatively match the evidenced based treatment modalities I am trained in to fit a client’s unique goals and strengths. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at 585-432-0717 or through email at maryvanvoorhislcsw@gmail.com to learn more about my practice or to set up a brief initial call to see if my practice might be a good fit for you.
