My name is Ashley and I am so proud of you for taking the first steps and prioritizing your mental health. Life transitions can be challenging. From navigating your young adulthood, starting college, and transitioning to independent adulthood, to realizing you’re not where you thought you’d be in life. My experience has been with people who have turned to alcohol, drugs, food, or self-injury to cope with various life events. Others have shut down in the form of depression or paralyzing anxiety. In essence, the ways of handling life’s stressors are no longer effective, and in these moments, we need help. I enjoy working with people who have the desire to learn how to better navigate their transitions. The University of South Dakota and the University of Georgia trained me in Person-In-Environment (PIE) theory. Giving me a holistic framework to understand how best to serve clients. It is from this view that I use cognitive behavioral and mindfulness techniques to address a client’s specific issues. For me, the key to a successful working relationship between therapist and client is mutual understanding. You are the expert when it comes to your life story. I can assist by using my perspective and empathizing but only you know how you feel and sometimes words can fail us. I’m a Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW) located in Athens, Georgia. I have been working in the behavioral health field since 2018. I have worked in mental health inpatient and American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) level 3.5 and 3.7 substance use residential settings. Client issues have included depression, anxiety, school difficulties, eating disorders, grief, and chemical dependence. At Stillwell Athens, we offer both individual counseling and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) to support college students and all young adults who are navigating emotional, relational, or life transitions. We provide different levels of care so clients can access the amount of support they need, whether that’s weekly therapy or more structured, consistent treatment, without stepping away from school, work, or daily responsibilities. Our approach is relational, developmentally informed, and evidence-based. We work with individuals, couples, and families using modalities such as CBT and DBT, alongside experiential and creative approaches when appropriate. We regularly support college students and young adults adjusting to independence, academic or career stress, and relationship challenges, as well as adults and parents managing changing family dynamics, identity shifts, and major life decisions. For those who need more than individual therapy alone, our IOP provides increased structure, group support, and clinical care while remaining fully outpatient. This option is well-suited for clients who are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or in need of additional accountability and connection. 10-15 hours of therapeutic support per week. Most recently, I served as the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services at George Washington University since June 2020 after serving as Director of Counseling at Ursinus College since 2013. Prior to that I’ve worked in the counseling centers at Drexel, Columbia and Princeton University after completing my pre-doctoral internship at the counseling center at Johns Hopkins University and receiving my PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Georgia in 2010. Prior to that, I earned my bachelor’s degree in psychology from Washington and Lee University and my master’s degree in psychological counseling from Teacher’s College, Columbia University Collectively, these roles allowed me to identify my passion for providing quality mental health services to the adult and young adult population, particularly in helping the undergraduate and graduate students navigate through identity, relational and transitional concerns and stressors. In these roles, I both provided direct therapy to university students as well as oversight for the delivery of counseling services- including staff supervision and management, evaluation and assessment of services and programs, establishing best practices for the centers that met the needs of the campus community and supported student development objectives as well as the academic mission. I most enjoyed working directly with students to address both clinical and developmental issues and frequently experienced that through therapy, they could better realize their potential. I am very excited to be returning to a purely clinical role to dedicate my energy to providing direct therapy. An inherent promise of the therapeutic relationship is that it offers us the possibility of grace - to be accepted for who we are. This is why I strive in my practice to connect individuals with the "curious paradox" that Carl Rogers spoke of - namely, "when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change." My years in practice have led me to appreciate how the most impactful change in therapy comes not through the exorcising of some fundamental flaw - i.e. "I will love myself only when I am not myself" - but through fostering a more intimate relationship to ourselves, friends, those we call family, and to our communities. I possess a gentle strength and innate curiosity, and I utilize an integrative approach that incorporates interpersonal therapy, cognitive behavioral therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), as well as somatic practices.
