Therapists for college students near New York University
Hi, I'm Lisa! I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in private practice in New York and Florida. I realize how daunting it can be to reach out when you’re struggling and find a therapist you implicitly trust. My personal experience in therapy informs my work and fuels connection for those in need of emotional nourishment, fulfillment, and a new foundation of confidence. With a deep passion for eating disorder recovery advocacy, I help individuals to recover from eating disorders, self-esteem, and body image issues. I strive to create a safe space and foster a genuine, compassionate, non-judgmental relationship with my clients. Everyone’s struggle is unique, yet together we will nurture your self-compassion, food freedom, and body appreciation, so you are able to show up as your authentic self and access your full potential. By validating your perspective, I am dedicated to creating a safe, encouraging, non-judgmental environment where you can explore and express your emotions, discover proper coping mechanisms and life skills to contend with daily challenges and make empowering choices. I encourage the importance of vulnerability, authenticity, communication, self-acceptance, and positive self-talk. Throughout my own personal journey, I trusted and felt the most connection with the clinicians who were recovered themselves. I have learned to own my story and share my truth to make you feel more trusting and comfortable. Having this connection has proved invaluable. I am so grateful for my work and love being able to help others to find the same freedom that I did. Owning my story, stepping outside my comfort zone, and leaning into discomfort has helped me become the person I am today, doing what I know I was always meant to do. Recovery can be your reality when you grant yourself kindness and compassion. I aim to provide support and education to individuals and families affected by eating disorders. I create a bridge for those needing and seeking help by connecting patients with a full comprehensive out-patient team including myself, an ED-sensitive Physician, Dietician, and Psychiatrist, if need be. A triple-team approach is often essential for those in recovery, and I collaborate with some of the best ED specialists and treatment centers in NYC and Florida. I am a graduate of New York University's Applied Psychology, Masters Counseling program for Mental Health and Wellness. Additionally, I have completed my BFA in Drama from Tisch School of the Arts and engaged in the MA, Drama Education Program at New York University. I am a member of The Academy of Eating Disorders and International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals Foundation. Additionally, I have actively participated in the comprehensive services of The National Alliance for Eating Disorders, Monte Nido & Affiliates, and Balance Eating Disorder Treatment Center, including various continuing education courses, trainings, clinical supervision groups, and national weekly support groups. I am licensed to practice psychotherapy and treat patients in New York, as well as patients that reside in Florida, via Telehealth.

I use a strengths based approach to treating adults with ADD and ADHD, based on the work of Russell Barkley, Ned Hallowell and William Dodson.
My work focuses on adults who experience relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, grief, low self-esteem, academic concerns, and trauma - especially relationship trauma. I see individuals and couples virtually and in person within a culturally sensitive practice. We recognize the nuanced experiences of marginalized people including people of color, immigrants, 1st gen college students, women, neurodivergent, working class, and queer folks. I see people as shaped by life experiences, relationships, identities, family, culture, and society. Plus we're unique individuals! Our work will consider all of this. I like to collaborate with my clients and strive to be honest, patient, flexible, nonjudgmental, warm, humble, curious, empathic, and social justice minded. I'm a neurotypical, cis, het, biracial, Black Puerto Rican woman w/ an invisible disability who grew up in a working class city. My approach is decolonial, anti-racist, LGBTQIA+, immigrant, and neurodivergent allied, feminist, & trauma-informed. Navigating OCD, anxiety, relationships, and life transitions can be emotionally and physically draining. There is little more frustrating than thinking and behaving in the same ways despite knowing they contribute to these issues and other debilitating symptoms. Therapy is a place to safely explore the thoughts, behaviors, and relationships that are interfering with living a more fulfilling and rewarding life. I am a trained OCD specialist and an active member of the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF). I have extensive experience working with college undergrad and graduate students from my time as a counselor at the University of Colorado, Boulder and at Bryant University. Working directly on a college campus has provided me with a unique understanding of the intersection between academics and mental health, as well as how to navigate many campus systems best. Currently, in my private practice, I work with college students from the many different colleges in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Colorado. The majority of clients that I work with are navigating Anxiety or OCD and Related Disorders. My clinical approach to therapy is grounded in ERP, ACT, and CBT. I believe therapy is built around compassion, respect, and trust. I look forward to connecting with you and exploring how we can collaboratively achieve your treatment goals. Send me an email, give me a call, or visit my website (www.smithlicsw.com) to set up an appointment. If you are struggling and are tired of trying to handle things alone, please do not hesitate to get in touch. * I provide telehealth services to clients in Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, Illinois, Vermont, and Colorado.*
I’m a social worker with nearly 20 years of experience helping people navigate life’s challenges with more clarity and confidence. I work especially well with young adults facing stress, anxiety, relationship issues, life transitions, neurodivergence, and the pressure to “figure it all out.” Therapy with me is real, practical, and judgment-free. It’s a space to slow down, feel understood, and build tools you can actually use in everyday life. You’re not broken — just human. And you don’t have to sort it out alone.
Are you ready for change? What I love most about my work is seeing clients make meaningful strides toward feeling better—little by little, day by day. I’m passionate about supporting first‑generation students, students from marginalized backgrounds, and students of color, as they navigate the emotional, cultural, and academic pressures that come with being the first in their families to walk these paths. My goal is to help students build a more harmonious, grounded, and empowered experience during their time on campus. I work with individuals experiencing: • Adjustment‑related stress, including transitions into college or new environments • Cultural transitions and the unique pressures faced by first‑generation students • Distorted eating patterns, emotional overwhelm, and challenges with emotion regulation My therapeutic approach integrates DBT and multimodal strategies, always rooted in cultural humility and a commitment to centering each person’s lived experience. I strive to create a space where students feel understood, supported, and equipped to move toward their goals with clarity and confidence. The most efficient way to get started is by visiting my website, reviewing the FAQ section, and completing the new client interest form. This will give me all the information I will need to determine next steps. I look forward to meeting you and supporting you on your journey.
