I worked in college counseling for four years, (2021-2025) and understand the unique challenges students face along with the systemic factors that can greatly impact students. Your mental health and wellbeing is essential for navigating the college experience, and you deserve support through this journey. When working together, we usually focus on whatever is most pressing for you. For some, this looks like discussing an upsetting situation and processing the emotions they are feeling, then finding ways to make these emotions more manageable so that they can function in their day-to-day life. Other times, we focus more deeply on connecting patterns and themes that have developed over the course of your life and figuring out how to navigate the world differently. I often help students to better understand and identify their feelings by pausing, slowing down, and connecting the mind and the body. We can work on how to handle distressing feelings without constant avoidance or distractions, how to communicate more effectively, and how to create meaning and wholeness. If you feel anxious, depressed, stressed out, and are having difficulty with managing all of the things you're trying to balance between your personal life and academic responsibilities, reach out and I am happy to connect and see if we'd be a good fit.

My name is Cristal Sampson. I am the sole owner and healthcare provider at Spirit Clinic. A great way to describe what it’s like to work with me is through a term I’ve coined: mindful medication management. Mindful med management is an approach to psychiatric care that is attentive to the unique needs and concerns of each individual. It’s a collaborative process, where we work together to ensure that treatment decisions are made with your input and full understanding. At its core, this approach is relational, focusing on building trust and fostering open communication, so you feel supported every step of the way. It's also deeply considerate, acknowledging and respecting your personal experiences and preferences when it comes to treatment. Taking a holistic view, it goes beyond just addressing symptoms—encompassing your overall well-being, including emotional, physical, and social factors. Most importantly, it’s patient-led, meaning that you guide the process, and I’m here to help you find the best path toward better health, on your terms.

Great to meet you! I’m a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and I earned my Doctorate in Nursing from Hofstra University. My path in healthcare has taken me through both inpatient and outpatient settings, where I’ve supported people during some of their most vulnerable moments. These experiences shaped how I practice today with empathy, patience, and a deep respect for each person’s story. As a Black provider, I understand the importance of feeling seen, heard, and culturally understood in mental health care. I recognize that many individuals, especially within underserved and minority communities, may face unique challenges, stigma, or barriers when seeking support. I strive to create a space where you feel safe, respected, and free to be yourself without judgment.I work with individuals navigating depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, ADHD, as well as prenatal and postpartum mental health. I believe in explaining things clearly, collaborating on a plan that feels right for you, and making sure you feel supported every step of the way. My goal is for you to leave each session feeling heard, empowered, and more in control of your mental health. My approach to therapy In my practice, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), but more importantly, I focus on meeting you where you are. In our first session, we’ll take the time to talk through what brought you in, what you’ve been dealing with, and what you’re hoping to feel or change. There’s no pressure just a space for you to be open and heard. As we work together, we’ll gently explore how your thoughts, feelings, and experiences are connected. I’ll help you notice patterns that may be keeping you stuck and give you simple, practical tools to challenge negative thoughts and manage overwhelming emotions. My goal is to make this process feel supportive and empowering, so you leave with skills you can actually use in your day-to-day life. What you can expect from me I take the time to really get to know you, not just your symptoms, but your story, your experiences, and what you’ve been through. My goal is to create a space where you feel comfortable, heard, and understood. I show up with patience, warmth, and honesty, and I take the time to explain things in a way that actually makes sense. College can bring pressure, transition, and a sense of disconnection from yourself or others. Many students struggle with anxiety, eating concerns, mood shifts, or feeling stuck in patterns that are hard to change alone. I work with students to understand what’s underneath these experiences and to build a steadier, more grounded way of navigating life.
Therapy approach A relationship between you and your therapist is a primary ingredient fostering meaningful change and personal growth. My approach is warm, open, and empathic. I listen deeply and engage actively as is helpful. My goal is to create a space where you feel safe to be your authentic self, free from judgment. You decide whether this is a comfortable setting for you to grow. I am a psychotherapist (LCSW) with a PhD and advanced training from a four-year psychotherapy institute. While I have had the privilege of working with individuals across the lifespan, a majority of my clients have been college age through young career adults. They come from diverse cultural, gender, ethnic, religious, and spiritual backgrounds. I have supported them through challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, often related to issues of this age group: life transitions, family issues, career decisions, dating, parenting, identity, and loss. I draw from a psychodynamic perspective to understand your unique story, while incorporating therapeutic approaches that seem to us to be most helpful for you. Therapy focus I see therapy as a journey we take together. You bring your unique situation and goals. I provide travel skills based on having taken journeys with others. I have never, however, been to your desired destination. You determine the direction and duration of therapy; only you can decide what to focus on and when you feel ready to move forward. While present-day concerns may be paramount, exploring your past can provide valuable insight into your current situation. I interact with you to ensure I understand what you are saying and to help you more fully express your thoughts and feelings. I use a variety of techniques to assist in therapy including role play, homework, journaling, naming aspects of the self, labeling thoughts that are helpful or not to increase your skills in desired areas and decrease those that prevent progress to your goal. All feelings including tears, anger, joy, and laughter can be part of our work together. Communication style I like a relaxed atmosphere that allows us to communicate easily. I am curious. I like to listen. I like to smile but I am also serious. I reflect back to you what I think you are telling me, ask some questions to ensure that I more fully understand what you are saying, encourage you to delve deeper, and wonder with you about when your goals and your actions do not seem aligned. I get to know you not only by what you say but by feelings that may emanate from you. I am comfortable with a broad range of feelings. I support strength and empowerment. I encourage you to let me know what interaction with me is helpful to you and what is not helpful. My goal is to offer a compassionate, thoughtful space where you feel heard and supported. Therapy Goals My goal for you is that you can live fully in the present, understand aspects of your past as they impact the present, and move forward on a path that is best for you. You can let go of people, situations and thought patterns that are not helpful. You can seek and find people and situations that will support you. You can find satisfaction in life and laughter even though everything will not be perfect and parts of life could remain difficult. Our first session After an initial conversation to help us get to know each other, our work together begins. You share the concerns that brought you to therapy, current life situations, and relevant history. I seek to understand what you are telling me as you begin to develop goals for therapy. You let me know how I could be most helpful to you. We begin to explore avenues to your goals and how to measure the progress you seek. This conversation expands over sessions as you feel more comfortable in therapy and as aspects of your life become clearer to you. At the end of this initial session, you can assess whether we could work well together.
