Therapists for college students near Ann Arbor, MI
I believe that therapy is a safe and non-judgmental place for clients to explore what is most important to them. It is important to me to relate to clients as whole people, who are much more than the concerns they bring to session, but people with unique identities, experiences, relationships, communities, and strengths. Keeping all of these in mind helps me offer personalized guidance, support, and perspective that ultimately serves client’s own goals. It is truly an honor to witness these various facets of individuals, and I am dedicated to bringing the warmth, respect, and support that clients deserve in turn. My past experiences have been in community settings working with women diverted from the criminal justice system for substance use disorder treatment and working with people with severe and persistent mental illness. Outside of the mental health/behavioral health field, I have experience supporting elderly persons with dementia and doing research with chronic pain populations along with LGBTQ+ populations.
You may have been holding things together okay, but lately it's been harder. It may be harder to sleep, do the things you want to do, or maybe you don't want to do anything at all. It's been too overwhelming and you don't know how to move forward. Emotions can take control sometimes. Other times we have difficulty engaging with them. I work with clients who want to learn how to navigate their emotions and process events that don't make sense. I help my clients engage with their emotions safely and confidently. I provide a Christian emphasis if desired. You don't have to keep doing this alone. I can help you process your emotions so you experience the freedom you're looking for. We will go at your pace.
I have many years of experience working with undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty and staff at the university level. The reality is that being a student or working in academia can be both very rewarding but challenging and I am here with the privilege of accompanying individuals on their journeys whether it be personal or professional in nature. I look forward to the possibility of working with you to reach your goals!
I'm committed to helping people in building (or rebuilding) a life worth living, however they define it. Whether you're looking for a way forward after a loss, struggling to adjust to a new situation, or just feeling overwhelmed, you don't have to face it alone. With a therapeutic approach informed by Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, I tailor interventions to suit each person's unique needs and goals. I believe in the importance of not just having the words to describe our emotions and the skills to manage them, but in understanding where our emotions are coming from in the first place. I'm especially passionate about supporting students and young professionals as they navigate the ups and downs of emerging adulthood. Therapy is most effective when it's with a provider you connect with. Schedule a consultation to see if I'd be the right therapist for you.

Being surrounded by other college students doesn't always protect you from feeling lonely or overwhelmed. College and graduate school can feel very isolating and challenging. Starting therapy can be the first step toward realizing that you don't have to carry these challenges alone. I am currently accepting new clients at Mindful Counseling, Standale location and via Telehealth. I work with adults seeking support for anxiety, depression, relationship and family challenges, emotional regulation, separation and attachment anxiety, life transitions, and identity development. I especially enjoy working with college students and young adults as they navigate increased independence, adjusting to college, academic and career pressures, and discovering who they are. Whether you're seeking support during a difficult season of life, greater clarity, or personal growth, I'm committed to partnering with you throughout the therapeutic process. My approach is integrative and individualized, drawing from CBT, DBT, trauma-informed care, mindfulness-based and somatic interventions, and person-centered therapy. I tailor treatment to each client's unique needs and developmental stage, with an emphasis on emotional regulation, self-awareness, resilience, and building on existing strengths. I strive to create a compassionate, collaborative, and nonjudgmental space where clients feel comfortable being themselves. I believe therapy is a shared human experience where we work together toward understanding, healing, and growth. Meaningful change happens through connection, collaboration, and a strong therapeutic relationship. If you're interested in learning more or scheduling a consultation, I'd love to connect. Hi! My name is Matt and I am a limited licensed professional counselor. I have been working as a counselor since 2022 and have been working in the mental health field since 2016. My first counseling job was at Central Michigan University and I worked with clients with a variety of concerns such as life adjustments, anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, trauma, etc. Before anything else, I'd first try to get to know you, your circumstances, your presenting problem, and your strengths before we focus on how we can make the best use of our time together, whether that be space to process, thinking of solutions, or something else. If we don't happen to be a match, that's ok! I work with a team of other mental health professionals who may be available to take on new clients as well.

When therapy becomes a reality A situation arises in one’s life that alters our once innocent perspective of our surroundings. I work best with students who feel like they are carrying the weight of the world—whether that comes from a history of abuse, difficult experiences with religion, or just the overwhelming pressure to keep it all together. You might feel like you have to be "on" all the time for your classes or friends, but inside, you are struggling to find solid ground. I provide a "Safe Harbor" where you can drop the act and be real. As a former firefighter, I am not afraid of the heavy stuff; I offer a judgment-free space to process trauma, anxiety, or deep questions about your faith and identity. You don't have to navigate this alone. As a Counselor in Training, I offer flexible, affordable options because I believe a tight student budget shouldn't stop you from finding peace. Let's work together to help you stop just surviving school and start actually living your life.
