Adjusting to new cultures as an immigrant, starting a new career as the only queer person in your company, learning how to navigate spaces of affluence as a new university student from a working-class background, and other major life adjustments can be some of our most challenging life experiences, especially when our ability to cope and adjust is limited by difficult traumatic memories and the resulting constant feeling of being overwhelmed. I believe that we are all deeply connected and that my healing and liberation is tied up with yours. I am excited to join you on your journey of growth and recovery. Please know that you are not a burden, and I am here to support you. Please reach out for a free initial consultation. We can discuss your needs. My degree is from Northeastern University where I graduated with a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and became Licensed in 1996. Most recently, I was the Director of Psychology for Wrentham Developmental Center and an Area Psychologist for the Department of Developmental Services. Previously, I had my own private practice where I facilitated numerous social groups, provided individual and family therapy, and served as a Consultant to Cranston ARC, and Bristol Community College. In joining Needham Psychotherapy Associates, I am returning to my passion for clinical work. My approach would be considered eclectic, involving systems work, motivational interviewing, narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, positive behavioral supports, and psychodynamic or insight-oriented work. In my view, the modality of therapy is often determined by the issues that one presents with as well as the style and comfort level of both the therapist and the client. It is important to me that the process of therapy is collaborative, sometimes humorous, and that clients are empowered to make choices in the course of their treatment. Simultaneously, I think there are times when clients need to be challenged to make further growth and progress. I love stories and the stories of people’s lives. In therapy, my style would involve asking a lot of open-ended questions to learn more about your story and your journey. Therapy should involve clients feeling, safe, challenged, and learning strategies and approaches to handle your problems more effectively. In the end, ideally clients will feel better about themselves and their world. Most definitely, I believe that there are times that clients should laugh in therapy, as humor and laughing are an important part of healing. I love working with young adults and the new ways they have of looking at the world as well as helping them navigate their present challenges and future transitions.
Individuals, couples or families I counsel are motivated to reach their potential, build a healthy and meaningful life and make a positive impact. I help people who have had some success in but struggle with anxiety, stress, ambivalence, fear, conflict or difficult relationships is holding them back. Couples I work with want a thriving relationship but struggle with communication, deeper connection, shared reality or intimacy. Families want harmony but struggle with conflict, disconnection and/or a member with a mental/physical health problem.

As a therapist, I take a collaborative approach with patients to relieve distress, improve well-being, and develop new insights. Together, we will identify patterns in living that you want to change, and discover how prior experiences have shaped your emotional life, relationships, and behavior, perhaps in ways that are outside of your awareness. I treat patients who experience anxiety, depression, difficulties in relationships, challenges related to work and career, and stress that is related to life transitions. My approach to therapy is interactive and open-ended, with a focus on helping you to learn about yourself and to find new, more fulfilling ways of living. With all of my patients, I work to build a relationship that holds the potential for you to discover new possibilities for yourself. I seek to have a practice that is diverse with regard to gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, and ability/disability status. The process of therapy includes exploration of all aspects of identity, including how both marginalization and privilege shape experience. This exploration includes processing how identity is experienced in the therapeutic dyad, and understanding how similarities and differences between the patient and therapist shape the therapeutic process. I welcome hearing from you to discuss the possibility of setting up an initial consultation. Together, we can determine if I can meet your needs as a therapist.

I see College and Graduate students at all year levels. I work with individuals and couples ( married and unmarried, who are dissatisfied with or want to improve their partnerships). Even the best parts of your academic career -- having more control over your own life, living with new people, getting to know a new city, forming new relationships, coming out to yourself or others, learning and pursuing what interests and inspires you -- can create stress. Relating to your family may be complicated, particularly if there have been difficulties at home. Loss, divorce, illness, abuse or substance abuse may factor into your story. You may be the first person in your family to go to college or beyond. You may have a chronic medical condition, visible or invisible to others. Figuring out who you want to be and what you have to work with may be unnecessarily burdensome to do all by yourself. When you hit a bump in the road, psychotherapy can help you problem solve, understand yourself better and come up with new strategies to move forward. Getting to know yourself better can be an important part of your education. Getting a handle on anxiety and/or depression can be crucial to making life work for you. Individual or couple psychotherapy can sychotherapy, free up energy to pursue life goals and improve relationships. I have worked with college and graduate students, as individuals and in couples, for over 25 years both in a University Counseling Center and in my private practice. I also have trained other professionals to work with students Please see my website or Psychology today profile for more information about my practice with couples and individual adults. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/roberta-caplan-waltham-ma/113684 I offer a free telephone screening to see if working with me might meet your current needs. I accept BC/BS PPO plans (not HMO) and can provide documentation you would need for out-of-network benefits for other plans.

We all encounter difficult stressors, setbacks and experiences that sometimes cause us pain. We may be challenged by our relationships, previous trauma, difficult transitions, depression or anxiety. We can make the choice to work through these events and grow even when things are hard and confusing. My goal as a therapist is to provide a safe place for you to explore your struggles, and give you objective feedback and guidance to help you improve your life. Whether you'd like to improve your mood, strengthen relationships or need support coping with a difficult circumstance I can help. In therapy, we focus on both problem-solving difficult situations, as well as developing an understanding of long-term patterns that contribute to your distress.
My fundamental belief is that people have the strength within them to make the changes they desire, if only they could access it. I work with each person in a tailored and individualized way, to capitalize on their strengths and harness their hidden resilience. I have spent my career working with people across the lifespan coping with various life stressors, achieving balance with competing demands, and specific mental health conditions including anxiety. The best way to get to the destination is to start the journey. For more details, please go to: www.weksnerpsychotherapy.com
I work primarily with those suffering from chronic illness. Difficult to treat medical conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic Lyme disease, multiple sclerosis, Lupus, etc. are often poorly understood, and it can be very difficult for patients to find the help and support they need. I teach my clients tools for coping with and managing every day life with these conditions, in addition to mind body medicine practices to help alleviate symptoms and to decrease stress. I have recently started offering Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy as a way to cope with life stressors or trauma.

One of the great promises of therapy is that even when we don’t know exactly what we need or know how to feel better, if we lean in with curiosity and compassion- and stay committed- we can learn to turn toward ourselves and each other with empathy, begin to build healthier relationships, and ride waves of emotions like a pro surfer. I believe we all have the capacity to grow and reach greater levels of understanding along happiness in life. I think the best way to get there is through a meaningful connection that is created in a safe environment where we can express our authentic needs. I often support clients with experiences like stress, depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, bipolar, ADHD, and autism. I have been trained in various clinical techniques in Europe, including schema therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. My approach is integrative and tailored to your unique goals and needs. Growing up outside the US, I also bring a cross-cultural perspective that deepens my understanding of the challenges people from diverse backgrounds might face. I empower my clients to gain insights into their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors so that they can make meaningful changes in their lives. Reach out if you're curious about working together!
