Hello, I am Dr. Calvin Young. I am a Veteran of the United States’ Army where I was trained as a special forces medic. As a mental health clinician my training includes credentials a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology; with a minor in Psychology. I hold a Master of Sciences degree in Human Services Administration; along with a Master of Science degree in Counseling. That credential was earned with an emphasis in Addiction Treatment and Psychometrics [clinical psychology core]. My academic training and credential includes as well, a Master of Arts degree in Human and Organizational Development. I completed most of the dissertation process to be awarded a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Human and Organizational Development and I am the holder of an earned doctorate (PhD) in psychology. I have been nationally(USA) -qualified as a Forensic Assessment and Substance Abuse counseling professional. With over two decades of experience in the field of applied social and behavioral sciences under my (expanding) belt. I have treated patients in inpatient, residential, hospital, and out-patient settings on an Individual basis; or as a part of a therapeutic Treatment Team. My experiences include treating couples, addressing family issues, dealing with organization’s psychological needs-and working as a mental health provider to stakeholders in the Legal Justice system as an Expert Witness in matters related to mental health, addiction and the Law. My forensic work has taken place in the United States, Canada and in the Caribbean (Jamaica). My clinical experiences include work with juvenile and adult substance abusers and sex offenders. And I have treated victims and perpetrators of violence. I have well over a decade of experiences as a contracted provider of clinical mental health and substance abuse treatment. I have been employed at several universities as a professor of Counseling, Psychology, and Sociology, among other related discipline areas. I am an experienced educator, who has taught at the secondary (High School), tertiary and graduate levels. I have trained and conducted seminars and workshops with professional and lay audiences for multiple topics in mental health and addictions. My treatment philosophy is shaped by an acceptance that the successful psychotherapeutic alliance, clients are best assisted with accomplishing the goals identified in therapy through and in a manner that –as much as possible- integrates and involves spiritual systems (church, temple, mosque, etc.), local communities, other social services organization, along with businesses, school districts, and even legislators as the most effective and beneficial manner of moving clients forward in order to achieve and maintain changed behaviors. My overall philosophy of care is eclectic as I do not think it is appropriate to place human beings in a box. I incorporate a wellness model in my psychotherapeutic work utilizing an integrative approach that incorporates the best of conventional and alternative medicine (CAM) into my treatment plan with my clients as as I understand that if the physiological is not considered and addressed, then the psychological and psychiatric will be poorly or at best only partially healed.

I believe that my clients know themselves better than anyone else, so my role is to provide resources and support to help them meet their goals. As a social worker, I also help my clients unpack how larger systems impact their mental health and relationships. I work from a queer-affirming, anti-oppressive, and neurodivergent-affirming approach to therapy.

I am passionate about working with individuals, couples, and families looking to strengthen relationships with themselves and each other. My approach is guided by systems thinking which places clients in a context acknowledging and exploring the myriad of factors that shape who we are as people and how we experience the world. I have experience working with diverse populations with a variety of concerns including relational conflict, identity exploration, trauma, grief, and sexuality. My wish is to walk with clients in identifying strengths and gaining insight while looking for patterns that no longer serve them to make room for new experiences. As an integrative therapist, I draw upon a variety of models while always maintaining a social justice lens. Trained as a relational therapist, I see connection to ourselves and each other as paramount to the human experience and have a particular passion in working with young adults in fostering healthy relationships. I have also completed a certificate in Sex Therapy from the University of Michigan's School of Social Work which has deepened my knowledge of working with people struggling with issues related to sexuality including functioning concerns. I am a curious, compassionate, and direct clinician who places emphasis on feedback and collaboration to ensure clients get their needs met throughout treatment. My hope is for clients to leave our sessions feeling more empowered and self-aware. The therapeutic relationship is a key factor in determining the success of therapy. Please contact me if you have any questions about how I practice to determine if I would be a good fit for you. I would love the opportunity to connect with you!

Have you ever thought, “Nobody will understand what I’m going through?” Do you struggle with anxiety, depression, self-isolation, or a negative internal voice? Have you had an experience making it difficult to move forward and live a fulfilling life? Are you feeling “stuck?” Though I will never know exactly what it’s like to step into your shoes, I thank you for the opportunity to let me enter your support system. I believe in normalizing mental health and these feelings we experience as humans. Attending to our physical, personal, social, and spiritual wellness is important. Healing is holistic, and though it may not always be easy, it is achievable. You are allowed to feel like this, and you are also allowed and able to live a more free and fulfilling life. I believe therapy is about inspiring self-growth and exploration, beginning with the therapeutic relationship. I want you to feel like you’re in the driver's seat, and I’m a passenger cheering you on, helping you navigate your personal story. I want to help you explore how your habits and self-talk impact how your story is told. I am here to aid you in handling your challenges and stressors and find meaning throughout the journey. I hope to build a safe and non-judgmental space for you to explore, feel unconditionally supported, and grow during and beyond our time in session. I want you to feel comfortable and empowered while you learn how to best support yourself as you experience life's intricate human emotions. Therapy is a brave step, and I’m so glad you’re taking the time to attend to your needs. I’m excited to meet you, work alongside you, and help you meet your goals! I completed my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I have had the privilege of working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and people of different races, ages, gender identities, religions, and sexual orientations. I have worked previously in substance abuse and crisis-intensive outpatient settings. I work with clients who may be struggling with anxiety or trauma related to past negative experiences. During our initial sessions, we will delve into your current stressors, and collaborate to create a plan for addressing them in a way that helps you get your life back. I use EMDR to address trauma to help people live in the present instead of the past without having to retraumatize themselves. I practice from a person-centered lens, working collaboratively with you to determine the best interventions for you. I will use EMDR therapy to help specific memories, beliefs, and experiences become "unstuck" so you can live in the now and develop adaptive thoughts. I believe the most important aspects of our work together are the trust and respect we cultivate with each other. I focus on using a strength-based approach and attention to habits, self-talk, attachment styles, and trauma-informed care. I use different theories and techniques depending on what works best for each individual because every person is different and unique. I hope to work alongside you collaboratively to explore how to support you best. It would be an honor to meet you and learn more about how I can fit into your support system. You matter right now and at every stage of your journey. You are worthy of a more joyful future.

I work best with students and young adults who are thoughtful, overwhelmed, and trying to make sense of who they are while carrying a lot more than they should have to. Many of my clients are navigating anxiety, trauma, identity exploration, burnout, family stress, or major life transitions like college, grad school, or early career shifts. I offer a warm, collaborative space where you don’t have to perform or have it all figured out. Therapy with me is grounded, reflective, and practical. We focus on understanding your nervous system, building emotional regulation skills, and unpacking patterns that keep you stuck while honoring your cultural background, values, and lived experience. I am especially affirming of LGBTQ+ clients, BIPOC students, neurodivergent folks, and those who have felt misunderstood in previous therapy spaces. My approach blends evidence-based therapy with curiosity, compassion, and real conversations. We move at your pace, with the goal of helping you feel more steady, more connected to yourself, and more able to navigate life with clarity and confidence.
