Therapists for college students near 19122
Hi, I‘m Chaise (He/Him), a student therapist under supervision as I complete my Master’s in Couples and Family Therapy. I recently moved to Philadelphia and spent most of my life living in a rural area before I moved. My journey towards becoming a therapist has been shaped by my life experiences and a desire to help people understand and cope with things that they experience. When I was studying psychology at Millersville University, I knew I wanted to be a therapist but struggled trying to figure out how I wanted to help people. Through the classes I took and internships I did I realized that the area I really wanted to focus on was sexuality and creating a space where people can feel safe and comfortable talking about any aspect that they want/need to. I’m especially drawn to working with people who are in the LGBTQ+ community as well as people or couples who are struggling with issues related to kinks and fetishes and/or sex addiction. One of my personal philosophies is that these topics needs a safe space to be talked about whether it be needing support while you explore your sexual identity or wanting additional support while you and your partner(s) discuss boundaries or discuss what you desire from each other sexually. My life experiences have helped me to understand that each person’s lived experiences are unique to them and so what may help one person might not help someone else. I try to bring this understanding with me into each session so I can try to support each client to the best of my ability while still trying to stay true to myself.

Many of my patients are people with multicultural/multiracial families and relationships, immigrants or the adult children of immigrants, people of Asian descent, graduate students, clinicians, or people who still feel empty and unsatisfied after achieving conventional hallmarks of success. Many have experienced shifts in class and/or religious identity who are looking to more deeply understand how their experience of depression, anxiety, or trauma is tied to these transgenerational and cross-cultural forces. With empathy and care, I will partner with you to explore your life, history, culture(s), and the wider world to see how these shape your inner experiences and relationships. In addition to feeling better, my hope is to help you to discover and create new ways of being in the world that feel more alive, flexible, authentic, resilient, and effective. Many people have mixed feelings about starting therapy and finding the right fit is so important for meaningful and long-lasting changes. If this profile has resonated with you in some way, there are no fees or commitments for the initial consultation. If you'd like to meet and learn more, please reach out today or visit my website.
At The Better You Institute, we work with students who feel overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected, even when things seem fine on the outside. If you're a student who gets good grades, has a good relationship with their family, and a healthy social life but feels like things could be better or you could be doing more, our therapists are the right fit for you! Maybe you’re juggling academic pressures, relationships, family expectations, identity questions, or feelings of anxiety and burnout. You might feel like you’re doing “all the right things” but still feel lost, unsure, or like you’re falling short. That’s where we come in. We create a supportive, nonjudgmental space where you can slow down, reflect, and make sense of what’s really going on beneath the surface. Together, we help you explore patterns that might be keeping you stuck—whether that’s perfectionism, people-pleasing, shutting down when stressed, or struggling to communicate your needs. Our therapists guide you in building healthier ways of thinking, feeling, and connecting so you can navigate life’s challenges with more clarity and confidence. Where you feel like you're in the driver seat, not everything else. We affirm and support all identities, including LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, neurodiversety. If you’re ready for therapy that helps you feel more grounded, connected, and true to yourself, we’re here to walk alongside you. You don’t have to figure it out alone. We have the tools to help you make this chapter in your life work for you, not against you and get to the other side with confidence.
You are dealing with the impact of your past experiences, all while trying to keep it together and manage the stress of daily life. Although you want to heal so badly, you feel like you can never quite find a therapist that you can show your true, authentic self to. You may be dealing with anxious and depressed thoughts, relationship issues, traumatic memories resurfacing, or feelings of anger and resentment. You need a space where you can connect the puzzle pieces and find deep and meaningful compassion for yourself. My work is attachment-based, trauma informed, and relational in nature. This means that we won't just look at the symptoms you are experiencing, but also the world around you and how you have learned to survive in it. I will be there to guide you and help bring awareness to the patterns and ways of being that have helped you through these difficulties. If you have resonated with what you have read thus far, I welcome you to reach out! I offer afternoon and evening availability for adults and adolescents to best accommodate busy schedules. I had a hard time finding a therapist that thought like me when I was a younger. As a member of the LGBT+ community, it is important to me that my clients know I hear the ways that the world is not built for them. Our work in therapy is to find ways to get your needs met in an often unaccommodating or misunderstanding world. I recognize the power of your experiences and how relationships (healthy & unhealthy) can define your perspective on yourself and others. Building a trusting rapport with you as your therapist is my top priority. Together we can make sense of what happened, your reactions, and how to reclaim a sense of self, safety, and belonging in the world by your own definition. I am a pre-licensed clinician based out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania under supervision of multiple licensed clinicians.
I provide individual, couples, and family therapy in person in Philadelphia, and I can see clients virtually in most states including New York. Because I completed my postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and was the director of Penn's O’Brien Center for Addiction Treatment, I have extensive experience with the needs of Penn students. I work well with student athletes, including those who are recovering from injuries. I am very familiar with the application processes for medical school, veterinary school, law school, and business school--and with careers in competitive industries such as consulting, investment banking, private equity, hedge funds, and real estate development. I can help students with burnout and academic stress as well as anxiety, perfectionism, and self-doubt. In addition to working with Penn Students, I also have experience with students from NYU, Georgetown, the University of Michigan, Yale, Brown, Fordham, Drexel, Bryn Mawr, Villanova, St. Joe's, Cornell, the University of Delaware, the University of Pittsburgh, American University, Penn State, Thomas Jefferson University, SUNY Upstate Medical University, and many other schools. I have helped students to find meaningful romantic relationships and to heal earlier relationship injuries that may be getting in the way of intimacy. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be very helpful for overcoming childhood and relationship wounding. More broadly, I am skilled at helping with career coaching, anxiety, depression, trauma, insomnia, grief, loneliness and addiction. I also work with people to improve their relationships with social media and screens. My style is nonjudgmental and flexible. I often use EMDR to help people to work through stressful or traumatic events and to better understand themselves. Depending on the client’s goals, I can integrate CBT, DBT, and solution-oriented approaches. I have extensive training in IFS (Internal Family Systems) and, for couples, IFIO (Intimacy from the Inside Out). I also have specialized training in the CRAFT approach for how to talk to loved ones about addictive behaviors without hurting the relationship. Using EMDR, I can help people to address the root causes of complex issues like addiction. My background is in positive psychology and addiction. My postdoctoral fellowship at Penn was in positive psychology. From that I learned to help people to use their strengths to build happier lives and careers.

You may be feeling that what you find anxiety-provoking, maddening, and depressing keeps appearing in your life. Without having an awareness of your unconscious processes, your deepest fears will continue manifesting in your relationships, friendships, work, and hobbies. Jared specializes in a range of techniques to bring compassion, confidence, and courage to exploration of the stories that generate daily experience. For Jared, committing to a non-pathologizing, psychodynamic approach means finding the thrill of meaning in every stuck point. The framing of therapy as an effort of "illness management" and "symptom control" is not only disheartening, it is ineffective. Specializing in addiction has led Jared to an understanding of the gift in any experience, even when it seems to be unambiguously bad, wrong, and destructive. The holistic perspective dictates that our mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical reactions are always wise. Conversations with Jared reveal hidden personality parts that have long yearned for knowledge of and conversation with your highest Self. He is a devoted guide to all the corners of your cognition and character, excited to bring your desires to light and share with you how to embrace everything you are and have.

If you’re queer or exploring your identity, you’ll find a space here where you don’t have to explain or defend who you are. And if you’re looking for a therapist who is warm, collaborative, and open-minded, this might be a good fit. Please reach out!

Anxiety is a whole-body experience: your heart races, you feel sick to your stomach, and as hard as you might try, you can't shut off the worry thoughts. You feel disconnected from yourself and the people and things you love. You want relief from the pain, and you also want to understand why you seem to feel things more intensely than others. You'd like to life a life where anxiety and self doubt no longer hold you back, where you can overcome creative and motivational blocks and learn how to better manage "big" emotions that sometimes seem to sweep you away. I use compassion, humor and harnessing the power of our minds and bodies to help you make powerful and lasting shifts in how you perceive yourself and how you interact with the world. I incorporate somatic and nonverbal modalities such as yoga, music therapy and EMDR. Finding the right therapist to journey alongside you is the first step toward uncovering your strengths and building the necessary skills for navigating the uncertainties and challenges of being human.
