Therapists for college students near Duke University
Offering compassionate, collaborative counseling for children & adolescents, adults & families, to help build meaningful, purposeful lives.
I have specialized in working with college and university undergraduate and graduate students since my graduate training and I have worked in six different college and university counseling centers. I have innate knowledge about the experiences that are relevant to college and undergraduate students and it is my mission to provide support in helping navigate the journey during this integral time of development. I have experience supporting students through general academic stress and concerns as well as compounding stressors relevant to diversity, culture and identity. Finally, I understand the intersection that other factors have during the college and university experience (i.e., family, friend and romantic relationship building and conflict, social injustice, financial stress, career uncertainty, etc.)
Our approach encompasses comprehensive care that goes beyond what you will find at your average mental health practice. We offer comprehensive psychotherapy services that go beyond the typical weekly appointment to include ongoing coordination with medical providers and stakeholders in your health/wellbeing, advocacy and consultation, connections with local and national resources, assistance navigating the complex system of mental health services, and incorporation of primary supports. We also offer evaluations incorporating scientifically valid, reliable psychological testing, in-depth clinical interviews, review of medical/legal records, and completion of collateral interviews. Both of our doctorate level psychologists have extensive experience service as expert witnesses in the justice system and are specifically trained to complete clinical, civil, forensic, and psychoeducational evaluations to meet the specific client's needs.
My approach is one of empathy and compassion where I will hold space for all of your emotions while you navigate through difficult life events. My counseling style is warm, nurturing, and person-centered and I use interventions from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy - helping you work toward acceptance and awareness of the full range of your emotions, thoughts, and sensations in order to better understand yourself. Some of the specific issues I address include eating disorders, self-image, body-image dissatisfaction, life transitions, and anxiety/depression. I have experience working with those in recovery from eating disorders, with a focus on binge-eating and emotional eating, and body-image issues. I believe that through a deeper understanding of ourselves, we can begin to make decisions with clarity. During our work together, we will work on developing a better understanding of your values, in order to live a life with more purpose and meaning.
Tiffany is a native of Mississippi graduating from the prestigious Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science. Tiffany has been providing counseling services since 2012 and Neurofeedback services since 2014. She is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina. Tiffany is one of only three clinicians in North Carolina's Piedmont Triad Region who is Board Certified in Neurofeedback from The Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA) and a certified mentor for the BCIA board certification process helping train other practitioners to become board certified in neurofeedback. Tiffany is a the only clinician in the region who has the Quantitative EEG-Diplomate Licensed (QEEG-DL) certification from the QEEG Certification Board. She is certified in HeartMath and serves as adjunct faculty at Wake Forest University in the graduate counseling program. Tiffany has received didactic training to read QEEG brain maps and administer scientifically based neurofeedback training from her mentor, Robert E. Longo, MRC, LCMHC, BCN; Richard Soutar, PhD, BCN (Alpha Theta Training); Tiff Thompson, PhD, MFT, BCN, QEEGDL, REEGT (QEEG Training), and Sebern Fisher (Neurofeedback and Developmental Trauma). When Tiffany began her career, she used more well-known techniques, like cognitive behavioral therapy and play therapy, but it wasn’t long before she became increasingly aware that the mental health field needed alternatives. Neurofeedback takes advantage of the brain's ability to change itself allowing a person of any age to make changes in behavior and thinking patterns more easily. Using a combination of counseling and Neurofeedback, Tiffany began to see more substantial changes in her client's lives. Currently, Tiffany utilizes Neurofeedback and Heart Rate Variability in combination with traditional counseling. Click here to read Tiffany’s article on the popular Blog—Triad Mom’s on Main. Tiffany works with a variety of clientele utilizing a person-centered approach, which means sessions will start with you and your needs. Together, we will explore the issues that you bring to counseling in a holistic way with emphasis on emotional and personal history perspectives. Tiffany‘s experience has allowed her to work closely with many children, teenagers, and adults of different needs and backgrounds where she brings enthusiasm, compassion and cross-cultural understanding to her work towards healing and wholeness.

Student life can be complicated but it doesn't have to be. Navigating personal and emotional concerns and relationships while focusing on academics, athletics or work/family-life balance often requires support and patience. Some students do this well, while others benefit from someone from the outside who provides them with a non-judgemental space to sort through and make sense of it all. Together we will identify the source of your concerns, and how we can work together to make sense of the thoughts, feelings and actions which are getting in the way of your personal and professional goals. I have worked with college students in many capacities and hope that my experience can help me to help you find a way through depression, anxiety, stress or life transitions.

Can you remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be? We live in a society that tells us who to be. We are taught how to behave, how to dress, how to speak, how to interact with the world… We are often raised in families plagued by generational traumas and toxicity, or simply behavioral patterns that do not support our individual needs and wants. I see you and I hear you. I want you to know that I understand what it feels like to question your identity or to push through societal expectations that no longer serve us. I will provide you with a safe and sacred space to explore who you truly are and wish to be.
I believe in healing through corrective experiences. It is possible to heal from trauma & anxiety, rather than just learning coping with it! I prefer to use methods that are designed to alleviate the distress associated with painful memories. This includes Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) and other Experiential Therapy modalities that are proven to be equally as effective in a virtual setting.
Chris McGinn is a North Carolina Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor who works with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and/or career and education transitional issues. It is Chris’ goal to create a safe, accepting, and comfortable environment to allow you, the client, to grow in self-awareness and self-acceptance. This begins by forming a mutually desirable relationship and bringing focus to your counseling sessions by setting goals that will be re-assessed throughout the counseling process. Chris's general counseling approach is based on the Humanistic perspective, which helps you develop a stronger, healthier sense of self and access and understand your feelings to help gain a sense of meaning in life. Chris utilizes a person-centered, strengths-based approach to help you become your best self: the person you'd be if you just weren't so tired, so anxious, so angry, or so depressed. He believes your work together is to challenge the reasons you feel that way in the first place so you can move past them and start feeling happier, more productive, and more connected to the life you want. He incorporates modalities such as art therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, experiential therapy, play therapy, existential, and trauma-focused therapy in sessions. Chris feels that a client-therapist relationship based on trust and acceptance is the most important element of successful therapy.

I work with young adults who often look like they have it completely together on the outside, but on the inside are carrying what feels like an impossible weight. You may be navigating grief for the first time, feel like the world is stacked against you and just need a place to feel like you're not alone.
At times, life can feel like trying to steer a parked car - you’re hoping to move, but the wheels won’t turn. Therapy, for many, becomes a place to begin moving again. Starting on unmarked and unfamiliar terrain can be daunting. With this in mind, I am passionate about providing an open and secure environment that allows you to express yourself authentically and regain momentum. As you steer your car, I partner alongside you with creativity and compassion. At times, life can feel like trying to steer a parked car - you’re hoping to move, but the wheels won’t turn.
