Shanna Barney LMHC
Shanna approaches therapy through a relational and systemic lens. She works collaboratively with clients to explore how environmental and cultural influences shape experiences of shame, trauma, anxiety, depression, and self-esteem, while helping clients reconnect with their inherent resilience, insight, and capacity for joy. She primarily draws from narrative therapy and mindfulness-based approaches, helping clients access the strengths and resources already present within themselves and their communities. Shanna is a sex positive therapist who has experience working with LGBTQIA+ clients and expansive relationship and family structures.
Shanna has extensive experience counseling in college settings and is passionate about supporting young adults navigating identity development. She provides ADHD assessments and offers a strengths based approach to ADHD related challenges with executive functioning, emotional regulation, and communication. Shanna also offers strategies for people with ADHD to advocate for their needs and thrive in environments that aren’t always designed to meet the needs of non-neurotypical folks.
Shanna offers assessment for OCD and is trained in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a form of cognitive behavioural therapy that teaches clients how to face intrusive thoughts (exposures) without engaging in compulsions (response prevention). ERP is an evidence-based approach proven to be effective in treating OCD.
Shanna studied Urban Studies and Women & Gender Studies at the University of New Orleans, earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the City University of New York, and her master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Marist College. Before becoming a counselor she worked in the nonprofit sector developing programs to create access to healthy food and public transportation in rural communities. She is currently accepting new clients for Telehealth sessions only.
