Drug & Alcohol Counselor, LAADAC II, SAP, NCAC I, CPRS
Last Updated 30+ days ago

-As a SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROFESSIONAL (SAP) I evaluate employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and I make recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare. I represent the major decision point (and in some cases the only decision point) an employer may have in choosing whether to place an employee behind the steering wheel of a school bus, in the cockpit of a plane, at the helm of an oil tanker, at the throttle of a train, in the engineer compartment of a subway car, or at the emergency control valves of a natural gas pipeline. My responsibility to the public is enormous! I’m an advocate for neither the employer nor the employee. My function is to protect the public interest in safety by professionally evaluating the employee and recommending appropriate education and/or treatment, follow-up tests, and aftercare.

-My NCAC I (NATIONALLY CERTIFIED ADDICTIONS COUNSELOR) National Certification is intended for professionals working within substance use disorder/addiction-related disciplines who wish to demonstrate their skills gained through years of supervised work experience.
-With the NCAC I credential:
• I may distinguish myself as a practitioner who has specialized in addiction assessment and treatment.
• I Demonstrate to clients, employers, and 3rd pay payors my commitment to quality care by verifying through certification the skills and competencies I have developed through years of work experience.
• My credential reflects a commitment of the highest ethical standards for Substance Use Disorder/Addiction professionals.
• The U.S. Department of Labor expects the demand for Substance Use Disorder/Addiction counselors to grow by 22% by 2024.

-As a LEVEL II LICENSED ALCOHOL and DRUG ABUSE COUNSELOR (LADAC II), I may provide alcohol and drug abuse counseling services in an alcohol and drug abuse treatment program or a recovery support program, or any program providing alcohol and drug abuse services or in private practice. Such services shall include the eight (8) domains: Clinical Evaluation, Treatment Planning, Referrals, Service Coordination, Counseling, Client + Family & Community Education and Documentation.

-As a TENNESSEE CERTIFIED PEER RECOVERY SPECIALIST (CPRS), I may provide direct peer-to-peer support services to others who have mental illness, substance abuse, or co-occurring disorders. I am a person who has lived experience of a mental illness, substance use disorder or co-occurring disorder, who has made the journey from illness to wellness, and who now wishes to help others with my journey. As a CPRS, I can draw from my own journey of recovery to inspire hope and provide support to others who are facing similar situations. “When two peers work on recovery together, they can progress further than if they go it alone.”
