Change can be really tough and really hard. It’s hard not to wonder “How did I get here?” Chances are, you’re probably repeating similar patterns over and over. That’s kind of what we all do. This can really help us at times—I mean, if something goes well, let’s keep doing it, right? But then what do we do when it doesn’t go well? What do we do when it seems like each time we’re kind of doing the same thing and getting the same response, and it’s not what we want? These patterns can go on for so long and when we finally want to do something about it—well, it can be super daunting to untangle what feels like a giant, complex, layered knot. I see therapy as helping with this process. I don’t have any magical solutions for untying this seemingly unending knot—I wish I did! But having a collaborative partner in the process who can help us see how experiences and situations from our pasts can be shaping how we see the world today can be incredibly helpful. It’s my view that therapy is very much a relational process and that having a strong alliance with your therapist is what ultimately leads to insight and personal change.
