Margaret Matthews
I am a social work intern with a particular interest in supporting people who have experienced trauma and are navigating grief, loss, death and dying, or terminal illness. In our work together, I hope to provide a compassionate, supportive space where you can process difficult experiences, make meaning of what you're going through, and identify ways to move forward that align with your values and needs. I value working collaboratively with patients who are open to exploring their experiences and engaging in the therapeutic process at a pace that feels right for them.
Curiosity and openness are important to how I approach my work, which is grounded in the belief that you are the expert on your own life. Together, we'll discover what matters to you and identify goals that feel meaningful and right for you.
Working together, you can expect a compassionate, accepting, and nonjudgmental environment that incorporates trauma-informed and somatic approaches to help you explore past experiences, connect with your emotions and bodily experiences, build self-understanding, and identify ways to move forward. Ensuring you feel heard and where your feedback helps guide our work, as does a warm, curious, and responsive style focused on your unique goals and needs.
My path toward becoming a therapist was shaped by supporting people close to me as they faced terminal illness. During those experiences, I learned the value of simply being present and offering care, compassion, and space for someone's feelings without trying to fix what couldn’t be fixed. I also discovered an ability to stay grounded alongside others during painful moments while honoring that their experience was their own. This has deepened my commitment to providing a warm, accepting, and supportive space where you can feel heard, understood, and less alone as you navigate life's challenges.
When I'm not working, I enjoy yoga, biking, taking long walks, skiing, and reading. I'm also an aspiring stand-up comedian and appreciate the connection and perspective that humor can bring. As a lifelong learner, I'm continually curious about new ideas, and am especially interested in exploring Buddhism and its teachings on mindfulness and compassion.
