Lucia Vail, PhD
Welcome to my practice. I am a licensed clinical psychologist with offices in Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York. I have practiced individual and couple therapy with adults independently since 2005. With extensive experience and advanced training in both the cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic traditions, I specialize in helping individuals who struggle in stormy relationships, those who feel lonely or isolated, and those who too often feel frustrated and disappointed by themselves and their interactions with others, including in past experiences of psychotherapy. They may have experienced trauma or other early life stress, and may feel anxious and depressed. They may have been diagnosed with mood or personality disorders. Some have struggled to stay alive.
I follow an integrative model comprised of cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic approaches. I completed intensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and have practiced it extensively since 2005. I try to help people explore how their early experiences may still be affecting their thoughts, feelings and actions, and to try out alternatives.
Before shifting to a fully independent practice in 2016, I was a supervising psychologist in a specialized program for the treatment of personality disorders. There I led DBT and interpersonal process groups, conducted individual therapy and assessments and supervised psychology interns.
I welcome people from all backgrounds into my practice. I have found that a close examination of cultural, religious, gender and other factors can illuminate a person's current ways of thinking, feeling and behaving.
