Jamal Oakes is a Mental Health Provider who graduated from the University of San Diego, specializing in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Jamal’s range of knowledge includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), psychodynamics, somatic, trauma-focused therapy, hypnotherapy, and mindfulness.
Jamal’s past work includes elderly adults, middle aged adults, young adults, teens, foster kids, pre-adolescent, and early childhood. He also has experience with athletes and adjustment disorders, anger management, anxiety, attachment issues, attention deficit (ADHD), behavioral issues, bullying, burnout, and coping mechanisms. He has gained knowledge working with depression, family conflict, life transitions, oppositional defiance disorder, self-esteem, self-harm, stress, and suicidal ideation.
Jamal chose to be a mental health provider because he noticed at an early age mental health was not discussed in his community. He would notice that there was a lot of shame tied to utilizing mental health resources, which pushed him to want to be a mental health counselor and help destigmatize mental health services for everyone. He wants to be able to provide a safe space for everyone while also helping them navigate any of life’s troubles with others.
He loves being able to wake up every day knowing that he is making a difference to someone in their life. He appreciates working with different groups of people and being able to connect with them.
