I am a clinical psychologist and learning disabilities specialist who evaluates and teaches children, adolescents, and adults with learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, math disorders, writing disorders), attention disorders (e.g., ADHD), and language disorders.
There are many reasons why someone might seek an evaluation. Usually, people request an assessment because they have trouble performing in specific areas at school, the workplace, or life in general. These can include having difficulty:
Reading accurately and/or fluently
Understanding what was read
Finishing academic tasks within time limits
Solving computation or word problems
Spelling
Writing grammatically correct sentences
Organizing/formulating their writing
Processing non-linguistic information (e.g., reading maps, analyzing charts)
Initiating or maintaining attention
Blocking out distractions
Interacting in social situations.
The results can be used to secure accommodations in the workplace or an educational setting.
Evaluations can be used to identify:
Learning Disabilities
Reading disorders (e.g., dyslexia)
Writing disorders (e.g., dysgraphia)
Math disorders (e.g., dyscalculia)
Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Including weaknesses in executive functioning
Autism Spectrum Disorder
