Elizabeth Novak
My career has focused on working with students, faculty, and staff at large universities and health care systems as well as providing counseling/therapy in private practice. I have extensive experience counseling, advising, and supporting students in medicine, STEM, law and a wide variety of academic disciplines as they adjust to the demands of undergraduate and graduate/professional programs. We focus on personal well-being, strategies to identify stressors, calm the nervous system/reduce symptoms of depression & anxiety, and promote healthy relationships to support academic and personal success. I also have training counseling
clients who are questioning their religious backgrounds, those seeking healthy relationships and/or who have experienced domestic/relationship violence or emotional and verbal abuse. Clietns may also be referred to me after they have exhausted brief services provided by their Employee Assistance Programs.
My work is grounded in the framework of relational neuroscience - the essential human need for safety, support, and connection. Along with principles of neurobiology and secure attachment, I utilize Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Internal Family Systems therapy, mindfulness, compassion based therapy, and other suitable approaches to provide culturally sensitive and trauma-informed care to a diverse range of clients. Currently I provide virtual therapy through Telebeavioral Health.US, a digital healthcare organization that accepts insurance and offers the same services online as clients receive with in-person therapy.
I am licensed in Michigan and Iowa and am happy to receive referrals through the Michigan State University Employee Assistance Program, MSU Counseling & Psychiatric Services (CAPS), and similar centers at other universities. Prospective clients may also contact me directly via Thriving Campus or at the link below.
