What to Say When Reaching Out to a Therapist: A College Student’s Guide
Reaching out to a therapist can feel intimidating, but having a script can make it easier.
Leaving a Voicemail
What to Include:
- Your name
- Your insurance info (insurance company and plan name from your insurance card)
- Your phone number (repeat it slowly)
- When you're available for a callback
- If you’re okay with them leaving a voicemail
Sample Voicemail: “Hi, my name is [Your Name]. I’m a student at [Your University] with [Insurance Provider], looking for a therapist. I’d love to learn more about your practice. You can reach me at [Your Number] on [Days/Times]. Again, that’s [Repeat Number]. Feel free to leave a voicemail if I miss your call. Thank you!”
What to Expect in Your First Conversation
Therapists may ask:
- Why you’re seeking therapy
- Your insurance information
- What goals you have for therapy
You can ask them:
- Are you in-network with my insurance?
- Do you offer sliding scale fees?
- What’s your approach to therapy?
- Are you accepting new clients?
Being prepared can make reaching out less stressful and help you find the right support quickly.
