How to Choose the Right Therapist as a College Student

Finding a therapist is personal, and the goal is to connect with someone you feel comfortable with who can support your mental health effectively.

  • Comfort and Fit: Just like any relationship, some therapists will be a better fit for you than others. Some students speak with multiple therapists before deciding, which is completely normal. Therapists are used to this process and also evaluate if they're the right fit for you. Review their profiles, including photos and personal descriptions, to get a feel for their approach and philosophy in helping clients. If their approach resonates with you, they may be a great fit.
  • Experience and Abilities: Therapists have different backgrounds and expertise. They are ethically bound to work only with clients they can support effectively. If a therapist says they’re not the best fit, it simply means they believe another provider may be better suited to help you.
